Fundraiser For Wil Riera

$52,545 of $50,000 goal

Raised by 660 people in 9 months
Created May 29, 2018

On Sunday, our dear friend freelance photojournalist Wil Riera was admitted into a hospital while working in Venezuela. He has undergone two emergency brain surgeries to correct a congenital disorder which has caused him to a have a brain
hemorrhage.

He is currently in a medically induced coma and the prognosis is uncertain.

The funds collected through Go Fund Me will be sent to a personal family friend of his who is overseeing his finances while he is hospitalized with the consent of his family.

The funds will be used to help alleviate the costs of any medical care not immediately covered by insurance. In addition, the money will be kept for future rehab, treatments, and daily life expenses as he rehabilitates. Since, he is a freelancer he is not receiving any income during his stay and his future is unclear.

Wil is the sole caretaker for his family. We will be sharing some of the money with his parents to cover their basic needs.

I have been Wil  Riera's assignment photo editor at Bloomberg News in New York  for over two years and have worked closely with him on a daily basis. Wil is an exceptional photographer and person.

Please give what you can -any amount is appreciated.

Help us spread the word.

Wil went home this week from the hospital and is currently at home being cared for by his friends and family. He is improving but has a long road ahead of him. Right now, he is unable to breathe without support. They are working to strengthen his diaphragm and vocal cords so that he no longer needs assistance. He has re-gained some movement in his hands and legs. Doctors are hopeful that with long term physical therapy his movement will be partially or fully restored. Wil cannot talk right now partly because of the tracheotomy that helps him to breathe. With your support, we have purchased a machine that allows Wil to type messages which then the machine reads out loud. This is going to help Wil communicate with less difficulty. Please continue to send positive thoughts to Wil.

Dear friends,

Thank you so much for all your care and generous support. We got an overwhelming response that will help with Wil’s ongoing medical needs. Currently, Wil has undergone numerous surgeries to reduce swelling and bleeding in his head. He is in the intensive care unit receiving support for breathing and eating and is showing small signs of improving each day. Please continue to keep sharing our GoFund Me page as his medical needs continue and his expenses accumulate. Wil has a long road ahead but we are hopeful. Wil is a kind and talented person and still has a lot to contribute to this world . Wil is surrounded by the strength of his family and friends. Please keep Wil in your thoughts. #fuerzaWil

Queridos amigos,

#fuerzaWil
