 DAVIS, CA
December 14, Jessica Vansteenburg, her husband Brian Chilcott, and their beloved dog Axel were in a car accident in Madera County, California. Brian was killed. Jessica was hospitalized with a broken arm and rib. Axel required surgery to repair a broken spine. After losing the love of her life, Jessi couldn’t bear to lose her dog too. Thankfully, Axel is well on his way to recovery, but his surgical expenses are  estimated to be $8,000 - $9,000. Jessica is currently a graduate student, and will need to relocate when she is strong enough. Family and friends have been keeping Jessica in their thoughts and prayers, but have asked how else they can help. We hope that you can help pay for Axel’s surgery and pitch in to get Jessica through this difficult time.  Any amount would be appreciated, please help us spread the word.

Now that his fur has grown back, it's hard to detect evidence of Axel's past ordeal. He's got a little bump on his back, and back legs are not always entirely under control. But he can run and jump, and is obsessed with squirrels in the yard. I'm slowly getting around to sending individual messages, but thanks to all of you for making Axel's recovery possible! I'm so grateful for my little weasel!

Brian was a guest at our camp in Maine where he shared his passion for mushrooms, the woods and our common earth. We will miss him dearly. He spoke of you, and with much love, we wish you a healthy recovery and our support for you and your family.

Jessi- I am so incredibly sorry. I feel so thankful to have gotten to know Brian. He was such a joy to be around, and will always be remembered in my family as Cameron's adventuresome friend who joined us in Maine, wowed us with his potluck contribution of forged mushrooms, and picked more blueberries than the rest of us combined. He will be missed so much. Sending all my love to you and your family

Jessi, I am a friend of your mom's and just found out about your devastating loss of Brian. I hope your arm heals well enough so you can enjoy the bicycle the two of you bought right before the accident and may you feel Brian's love as you ride it. And may Axel continue to give you the unconditional love that only dogs can provide. Love to you and in Brian's memory. Laurie
