Historical Black College Tour Fund

Have you ever had a goal you wanted to accomplish but didn’t have the resources to do it?

My goal is to be the first person in my family to attend college. Union Baptist Church is sponsoring a Historical Black College Tour. I would like to attend this tour in order to view my options for college. I am hoping that you would be willing to invest in my future.

My name is Mar-Taja Montgomery and I am a student at Journalism Media Academy High School in Hartford, CT. The Journalism Media Academy high school shares a partnership with the Connecticut Public Broadcasting Network (CPBN) I have produced my own segment called the Mar-Taja's Do's and Don’ts featured in the Hashtag show, that students of JMA and myself produced.

The Historical Black College Tour is an experience provided to college-bound high school students. I would have the opportunity to visit the campus of multiple black colleges, ask questions to further my understanding of college costs and tuition, witness first-hand the diversity of the various colleges and what they have to offer, and speak with notable professors. This trip will help me in my journey in finding the right college for my career path.

Attending college has always been a dream of mine. I want to become a judge so that I can affect change within my community. I have witnessed many crimes and social injustices growing up as an African-American female in Hartford. When I turn on my television, I see images of African-Americans portrayed in a negative light. My mom struggles daily to give me the opportunities that she never had. That’s why attending the Historical Black College Tour is so important to me.

The Donations that I receive will not only be for the college tour, if I raise more money it will be used for college books, and college applications. The Historical Black College Tour will take place on April 12-19.I will have the opportunity to visit Howard University, Tuskegee University, Spelman College, and others (full list below).

The trip is April 12-19, but funding is over by March 9.
