Brian Ristow has just been awarded one of the highest honors in education: the 2016 Fulbright Distinguished Award in Teaching by the U.S. State Department.  He is also a former Newport-Mesa Secondary Teacher of the Year and Orange County Teacher of the Year Semi-finalist.  He has taught some of the most challenging students with special needs using innovative methods for the past 15 years with remarkable compassion and patience.  With this award he now looks to discovering new pedagogy to deepen the learning experience for all students.

The Fulbright Distinguished Award in Teaching aims to increase global competecy and goodwill by sending exceptional educators abroad to research international best practices, and bring those ideas back to their local communities in impactful ways.  Each Fulbright award is selected through a rigorous application process by a selection committee appointed by the President of the United States.  As part of this award, Brian and his family will be traveling to New Zealand from February to June 2017 to explore some of the strategies that make New Zealand a global leader in education.   He will bring back these ideas the Newport-Mesa community, sharing with other educators new tools to improve the learning experience for all students.

More about the Fulbright Distinguished Award in Teaching and can be found here

What you may not know is that while this award covers all of the international expenditures to carry out and implement the proposal, it is expected that the grantees school district will celebrate and partner in the cause.  This includes helping offset the costs of domestic expenses such as health insurance, benefits, and salary arrangements.  The Newport-Mesa Unified School District is currently unable to financially support this endeavor in any fashion, meaning no salary, no health insurance, and no benefits.

We believe firmly that our students and their families, and the entire Newport-Mesa community, deserves this award and the benefits that will come with this experience. Brian and his family are willing to shoulder much of the costs, but as the costs continue to rise (think international health insurance for a family of 5!) we are reaching out to our community for help.  Our goal is to raise $7,500 to offset these expenses.

To have recieved such wonderful accolades, and to have taught so many wonderful students with special needs, and to have partnered with the most gracious families over the last 15 years truly makes my heart full, but my wallet empty!

We are grateful and humbled by your support and thank you all for journeying alongside of us!
