Purpose: To assist Michael Wallace with the overwhelming medical expenses related to his kidney transplant.
Mike has been extremely fortunate in finding a kidney donor, who will save his life. Now comes the reality of the medical costs on the horizon.
Michael Wallace of Torrington, is the son of Jack and Jean Wallace. Jack has a nearly 50 year history of helping others as a Volunteer Fire Fighter, Fire Chief, (Torringford), EMS member (Harwinton), and Fire Police Chief (Harwinton) . He also dedicated 50 years of his life, fund raising and as an announcer for Torrington’s Christmas Village.
Now, after a career of helping total strangers, Jack seeks help for his son.
Michael grew up in Torrington CT, but later moved to Harwinton where he graduated from Lewis S Mills High School, Class of 1982. He attended Central Ct State University, and later started a career in the furniture business, where he remains today at Southworth’s Furniture in Torrington.
Twelve years ago, he started experiencing severe migraine headaches for about 9 months. His blood pressure had risen to189/135. Following testing and a biopsy, he was diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy, also known as Berger’s disease.
His condition was kept stable for about 10 years, when he was on various medications including massive dosages of steroids.
Nearly 3 years ago, his kidneys shut down, and he began the long, arduous, and expensive process of daily, 10 hour, peritoneal dialysis, and the search for a kidney donor began. His medical out-of pocket costs continue to rise.
After an extensive search, an amazing, kind, generous, and “one in a million” donor has come forth, and after thorough testing by Yale-New Haven Hospital’s Transplant Unit, he is a perfect match. He will save Mike’s life !!! Thankfully, the donor's surgery, drugs, and all medical costs are fully covered by the hospital.
Mike needs your help in overcoming this extreme financial burden, due to insurance limitations, co-pays, and the extremely high costs of anti-rejection drugs. His annual out of pocket costs, just for the first year, are estimated at over $20,000.
