Abra & Cadabra were surrendered by a breeder in Oklahoma and brought to Minnesota so they could enter Secondhand Hounds' program. Typically purebred puppies aren't surrendered by breeders, so we expected them to come with some baggage, one way or another. We didn't expect them to be slowly dying of heart defects. Sometimes it's hard being the dumping grounds for unwanted animals. It isn't fair to the puppies. And it makes it hard for us to save more animals, when we are committed to animals who need thousands of dollars worth of surgery.
When A&C arrived, and our vet checked them out, it was obvious that they had severe, life threatening heart defects. We quickly had them seen by a specialist, and $880 later we were referred to the U of M's Cardiology program for surgical correction.
The good news: their hearts are able to be fixed with a procedure called a balloon valvuloplasty.
The bad news: it needs to be done as soon as possible for the best chance of survival.
The ugly news: this procedure will cost between $3000-3400 PER puppy, with the rescue discount.
Obviously, our rescue treats each of these animal's as our own. We love them dearly and will give them the care they need, especially knowing the success rate of surgery is high. But, we need your help. When all is said and done, we will be spending well over $8000 on these two precious souls. We cannot continue to rescue and treat cases like theirs without donations! No amount is too small. Every penny helps.
