It is with heavy hearts that we post this update.  Tom’s remains have been found in Costa Rica, and our worst fears have been confirmed. He was murdered, and there are indications of questionable financial transactions.

Our focus now is to bring Tom home, celebrate his life, and work with the authorities to determine what happened.

Tom was a lot of things: a Navy veteran, a successful small business owner, a lover of the sea and sun, but above all, he was a beloved family member and friend. His loved ones are overwhelmed with the outpouring of support that we received as we searched for Tom. It is evident that his zest for life impacted so many.

We  ask for your continued support to  bring to an honorable and loving close the story of this man who was taken from us too soon. A man who served his country, served his community, reveled in each day, happily did as he wished, was not distracted by stressors or pettiness, embraced every moment, lived…oh boy, how he lived.

If you wish to contribute, but would like to do so off-line, please email bringtomcookhome@gmail.com to ask how.

From Sandy LaFrance

I am pleased to announce that my brother, Thomas Cook, is finally coming home. It has been a very tough and horrific experience to say the least, but I am so very grateful that we were able to find him, even though the outcome was tragic. A big shout out to Missing Americans Project (MAP) for their awesome help in finding my brother. This case is still under investigation, and I pray that we can find the people responsible for his death. I also want to thank each and everyone of you who donated to the GoFundMe campaign so we could find him, cover the costs of his final preparations, and give him a great “celebration of life” party he so deserves.

We have set the date for SATURDAY, JANUARY 5, 2019, at 6 PM at the Eagles Club, Shelburne Rd. South Burlington, Vt. I hope everyone who knew and loved Tom can attend!

I also want to thank “Team Sandy”, who pooled our resources and worked diligently to find Tom (Nancy Hawley, Samantha Eayrs, Cathie Walsh Snellinger, Karen Walsh Chace, Patti Allen, Mickey Auclair). I personally want to thank God for answering my prayers to find my brother so we could bring him home.

With the very fortunate discovery of Tom’s remains, we are bringing this campaign to a close.

With many thanks to all of you, we accomplished what we set out to do: Tom was found. All funds beyond those used for the private investigator have been turned over to Sandy to help with repatriation of Tom’s remains, final arrangements, and possible additional action associated with the Costa Rican investigation.

Further information or updates will be posted publicly on Tom’s Facebook page ( https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1621161835). If you’d prefer to receive updates by email, please send a short note to bringtomcookhome@gmail.com.

Peace out.

I just received word that the body in question WAS INDEED my brother Tom. He was murdered by some very bad people. It is with a heavy heart I share this with all of you, but I ask you to remember that his spirit is no longer there in that morgue, but in a much better place! I will keep you all aware of when we can take him home to his final resting place. Thank you.

10/12/18 - From Sandy LaFrance

Our family is overwhelmed with the love being expressed by so many for Tom. It’s helping us get through some very difficult days.

The Costa Rican authorities have not yet provided positive identification of the body, but we are reasonably sure it is Tom. We are excruciatingly aware of how long this seems to be taking.

Susan Sussman in Senator Leahy’s office has spoken to the Chief of American Citizen Services at the U.S. Embassy in San Jose, who informed her that, in addition to the difficulty of positively identifying remains, there are bureaucratic backlogs at the morgue brought on by the recent national strike. The U.S. Ambassador to Costa Rica is aware of the situation.

We are told that our contact at the Embassy checks at least every morning for an update from the OIJ.

The bottom line is that the U.S. Government can not tell Costa Rica how to conduct its affairs nor we can we necessarily persuade them to provide a timeline that they may not be in a position to construct.

We are in touch with the Embassy at least once a day. They understand that we want information. We are doing everything possible to get answers.

For now, we somehow have to remain patient.

With blessings and deep gratitude for your love and caring,
Sandy LaFrance
