Frida Bowie's Recovery Fund

On March 29, Pat and I rushed Frida to the emergency vet for what we suspected was anemia. She was lethargic and refusing to eat or drink. We have worked with Dr. Saubier at Animal Emergency Hospital in Bel Air, MD before, and we knew that we could trust her to provide Frida with the best care.

After running some blood work, Dr. Saubier reported to us that not only was Frida suffering from anemia, but her liver enzymes were elevated -- especially her bilirubin levels, which is incredibly serious and can be indicative of a liver disease. High bilirubin levels call for immediate treatment or else they can be fatal, so we consented to have Frida treated.

Frida was discharged with several medications, an urgent care food with high calories designed to get her weight up (it had dropped dramatically), and an order for subcutaneous fluids. Frida now spends her life isolated in my home office so that we can monitor her food intake; she receives meds twice a day and sub-Q fluids every other day. She is still very jaundiced, which shows that her liver is still not functioning properly, but as we're not even a week into her home treatment, we're hopeful that she will improve.

Needless to say, we have quite the long road ahead of us.

Best case scenario, Frida is responsive to her current treatment and she recovers fully. Dr. Saubier ensured us that Frida's enzyme levels aren't high enough to be considered a death sentence. Obviously, this is what we're hoping will happen. However, right now we're too early in the game to know for sure.

However, it is highly likely that Frida will require special care for the remainder of her life. Since she's only 4, that could be another 10 years.

We are prepared to love and financially support a  cat with a chronic illness, and we will take steps to ensure that we can always afford her care. It's easy to be prepared for something when you can expect it.

Unfortunately, we were not prepared for the astronomical vet bill that we received at the hospital on the 29th, and it has left us a bit financially devastated. We come to you now, out of all other options, asking for your help.

Our goal of $2000 will help us pay off the emergency vet bill and will also go towards whatever the next course of action in Frida's treatment is. She will be spending a lot of time at the vet's office, and as I'm sure most of you know, the costs associated with that can rack up quickly.

We cannot ever express fully in words how thankful we are to all of our friends for being the wonderful, kind, loving, and supportive people that you all are. Your support means the world to us and we love you.

Love,
Amy, Pat, and Frida
