William (Will) Anh Nguyen is a Vietnamese-American, born and raised in Houston, Texas, and longtime resident of California. He earned his bachelor's degree in East Asian Studies at Yale University. He received a full scholarship at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in Singapore, where he served as president of his class and will graduate with a master's degree in July 2018. He is fluent in Mandarin Chinese, Vietnamese, and English. He is deeply passionate about Vietnamese socio-economic issues and navigates the world as a proud member of the Vietnamese diaspora. He is a son, a brother to 3 siblings, and a dear friend to many who have mobilized on his behalf.

While awaiting his upcoming graduation ceremony, Will visited Vietnam, as he often does. On June 10, 2018, the people of Vietnam publicly protested in the streets of major cities, such as Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, against special economic zones (SEZs) that would lease certain regions of Vietnam unconditionally to China for the next 99 years. Will was present in these demonstrations not for any particular political agenda, but in order to support the Vietnamese people and their freedom of assembly. He believed this protest would be a peaceful demonstration of civic participation, and for this misconception, he was beaten, dragged, and arrested. Will sustained head injuries at the hands of the police during their efforts to detain him. He has received no medical attention and has no present right to access any legal aid.

"Our pursuit for justice in Will's case has been met with overwhelming support at all levels. From friends and family dropping everything, to Members of Congress accommodating last-minute meetings, the way people have gone above and beyond to advocate for Will's behalf is absolutely humbling. But, most of all, this speaks to Will's character and the kind of influential human being that he is. We were able to share his story with almost every major international news outlet. But that's not enough. This has escalated out of control, and we demand justice. We all want him home. And simply just that." - Victoria Nguyen (younger sister of Will).
