Freetown Emergency Flood Relief

€19,046 of €50,000 goal

Raised by 645 people in 19 months
My name is Mallence Bart-Williams. Presently there is a flood in the capital of my country, Sierra Leone. People have lost their lives, homes and belongings. I would like to ask your support in raising funds to provide emergency relief.

Rains are expected to get worse and the situation might escalate further.

Your help is very much appreciated.

I am purposely not posting the images that I received out of respect for the families of those bodies.

The he funds will be used to provide emergency help to the families affected by the flood, including water, food, emergency shelter, toiletries, mattresses, diapers, baby food, blankets.

Thank you, Mallence

After a lengthy selection process of data, verification of information gathered, the process is finally coming to an end. From an initial record of 440 orphans (single and or double) we have arrived at a number of 57 individuals that are below 18 years of age, that we will support up to their secondary education via the educational fund that we have set up for the youth affected by the flood and mudslide in Freetown, Sierra Leone. The criteria for the fund was to be below 18 years of age and either a single or a double orphan as a result of the flood in Freetown. We also considered individuals in this age gap that were orphaned before as a result of ebola and have lost family members and / or their houses during the flood. The educational fund that we set up with Sierra Leone's largest non-banking financial institution (ACTB - A Call To Business), will equip the students with a mentor, as well as covering their school fees, transportation expenses, books, exam fees, school uniforms, shoes, bags, utensils, lunch and miscellaneous.

The fund will be an ongoing fund and support the students all the way up till their higher secondary education. We will continue to raise money to ensure that the education of these students is secured until they graduate high school. In the near future you can get updates on www.freetownflood.com

In addition to the FREETOWN FLOOD EDUCATIONAL FUND, I initiated an Innovation Lab for women that were affected by the mudslide. Local innovators teach women how to build practical solutions from scrap components, such as a 'Fuel Free Generator' and a 'Solar Powered Mobile Phone Charging Station'. Whilst acquiring technological and scientific skills and insight, the devices that they build enable these women to generate immediate income as well as spread their knowledge and empower a wider network of women, a grow a female force in a conventionally male dominated industry.

Education equips you for life and will sustain you in the long term.

Thank you for your continuous support.

Countless people will forever remain buried here....burried bodies - burried seeds But what kind of life awaits their relatives? I have asked myself a range of questions over the past few days and it took a while to gain clarity.
After careful consideration and ensuring that the immediate needs of the flood victims are met, in the sense of basic provisional shelter, water & food, as this is everybody's focus, I decided I want to assist as many children to return back to school. I believe their education now matters more than ever, especially for the ones that lost their entire family in the mudslide. I cracked my brain on how I could facilitate that for a maximum of kids with the funds I have. I decided to set up a fund for X amount of kids that will cover their school fees, feeding, school uniforms, books, transportation, accommodation where applicable and miscellaneous expenses until they graduate. The funds raised thus far will not be able to cover more than 30 kids for 1 year. However I intend to find a financial institution that will double the funds while exploring other avenues in order to cover education for 100 students. The fund will be ongoing and I will continue to raise money to ensure that their education is ensured until they graduate high school. I know I have a very strong network and support system around me that I haven't fully tapped into, as I wasn't sure how the situation would present itself on the ground in Freetown. Now, however I am clear in terms of HOW I wish to proceed & WHAT I wish to achieve✨......I trust it will manifest as I'll watch the universe conspire. ✨✨✨
