Get FREEDOM RIDERS to New York!

SAN DIEGO! Help Richard Allen, J. Scott Lapp, and Taran Gray get their musical to New York THIS MONTH!

FREEDOM RIDERS: A New Musical has been accepted into this year’s NYMF (New York Musical Festival)! The Festival will be a HUGE opportunity to showcase the music and story in front of producers, investors, the New York press, and theater houses that are searching for the next big musical. And we believe we have it!

The performance in New York will be a two-hour event that will showcase the 17 songs from the show, set to a script created specifically for the NYMF format. On a minimal stage designed by Niko Rabbit, projections from the original 1961 Freedom Rides Civil Rights bus journeys will be shown in the background. The Director is J. Scott Lapp and the music is directed by Bill Brown. Songs will feature dancing choreographed by John Rua. Our extraordinary cast is lead by Brynn Williams as Diane Nash, Mykal Kilgore as John Lewis, and Ciarán McCarthy as John Seigenthaler.

This is where you can help cover the expenses! Our low and extremely tight budget includes flight tickets, hotel stay, rehearsal studio, theater rental, lighting bill, stage manager, fireproofing, cast salary, crew salary, musician salary, promotions and festival fee. Being at NYMF puts our show in front of producers and investors that can help us get to the next level. Our overall budget is $60k, for which we are seeking investors, but you can help us with the first $10k!

Our musical about the freedom rides into the South that launched the civil rights movement is charged with modern parallels to the new Civil Rights Movement, teaching non-violent social change. FREEDOM RIDERS: a New Musical follows a mixed group of Civil Rights activists as they risk their lives riding interstate buses in the extremely segregated South. The end goal: to bring attention to the injustice of segregation by an action that would bring the world the image of ‘burning bus America’ that most Americans wanted to deny existed. It uses the musical elements of the iconic Sixties to create epic anthems that cut through the complexity of history by establishing a relevant contemporary narrative. FREEDOM RIDERS: A New Musical proclaims the youthful and impatient voice of the American Civil Rights Movement.
