Background to fundraiser:
My daughter is 13 years old and has struggled with Alopecia since she was 3. She lost most of her hair soon after her diagnoses. Her hair comes and goes, however has never fully grown back, even with the help of medication. We have tried numerous methods to help with this condition. As she began middle school my daughter, her doctor and I decided to give her Cortisone shots to see if it will help boost her hair growth. The shots worked however, they are very dangerous long-term use and the doctor refused to provide more which my daughter and I both agreed her health was not worth her hair growing back. Although she was devastated when her hair starting falling out again, especially being in middle school. She walks the hallways or sits in class as people have mocked her or made side comments. It has been extremely difficult and damaging to her self-confidence.
Fundraiser:
We are trying to raise $2,950.00 for a special hair prosthetic that cost $5,900.00. The prosthetic is made in New Zealand and is called a Freedom Wig. This prosthetic is not your average wig, this piece suctions to the head so when pulled on, it will not come off. She can swim, ride horses and do any activity without the fear of it coming off. This piece will assure her confidence especially in middle school going to high school. She has been in a situation where her beanie was pulled off and her head exposed. The average wig will still leave her fearful of being pulled of or falling off.
