Help Free Union Release New Music in 2021

Donation protected
The month was November 2019 and we had just wrapped recording our next release at Montrose Studio in Richmond, VA with the support of Adrian Olsen  and DJ Harrison . Four months later, everything came to a stand-still as Covid-19 swept across the world. We were completely stuck: no gigs, festivals, or opportunities to build our community in-person. Funding a new Free Union record seemed impossible.

Throughout quarantine, we continued creating even though it was difficult. Between a deadly virus, civil & social unrest, and a divisive political climate, 2020 offered many things to write about. In case you missed it, we self-funded and self-released a double-single in January entitled Somethin ’/The Other Side”  to give something back to our fanbase after a tough year. We are committed to releasing a constant stream of music in the upcoming year - we need your help though!  All donations given here will replace our lost gig income enabling us to release more music in 2021 and covering all the costs of mixing, mastering, artwork, and promotion. Will you join us?

About Us
Free Union is a Charlottesville, Virginia-based collective led by Michael Coleman (vocals/rhythm guitar) and Rob Dunnenberger (drums), and features Carrie Coleman (vocals), Parker Hawkins (bass), and Tyler Hutcherson (keys). The band’s sound is not distillable, it’s ever-evolving music is rooted in soul and incorporates rhythm and blues, rock, and pop into its sound.

In its short history, Free Union has found quick momentum including a debut performance at the 2019 Lockn Music Festival , a feature on NPR Music’s Heavy Rotation September Songs Public Radio Can't Stop Playing (2019 ), and a national appearance on the acclaimed WXPN National Public Radio program World Café (2020).

Throughout the elongated season of quarantine and the COVID-19 era, the band has maintained a video Quarantunes Series, featuring live versions of original songs like “Good Day to Cry” and “It Gets Better,” alongside holiday tunes and spirited covers of current pop hits by the likes of Harry Styles and Billie Eilish.

The history behind the collective’s name gives context to its message. Free Union, Virginia—originally named Nicksville after a free African American blacksmith—sought to unite people of all races at a time when the country was inherently divided. These principles of inclusivity are the underpinnings of this collective. Free Union brings people, musical styles, and ideas together to inspire a message of unity.
