Fred's ongoing vet treatment

Donation protected
Gateshead Newcastle Cats Protection (Reg Charity 203644) need your help to pay towards the ongoing treatment and care for Fred. Fred was seriously ill when he came into our care but as long as there is a chance we will always care and look after all cats that find us. 100% of funds raised will help us to pay towards Fred's food and vet treatment and ongoing veterinary tests. It's £65 a month for wet food, £10 for the dried food and £8 for Laxapet for Fred alone. The costs are ongoing as he needs 3 monthly liver and kidney function blood tests at nearly £100 if you include the consult, ongoing medication and care with any flare ups.
Cats and kittens come to us for many reasons: because they have been mistreated or abandoned, because their owner has died or is incapacitated and no longer able to care for them, or because their families have had to move to a home that can not accommodate cats. Some simply need to find a new loving family. Others need a bit of help to trust people before they are ready to be adoptedand there are some like Fred that need to remain in the care of our charity to make sure they get all the care and treatment they need for life.
We do all of this through the services of volunteer fosterers.
Fred is a lovely cat with a very easy temperament, though being a BIG  dominant boy he tries at times to be a dictator. I swear he believes Jeni his foster mum is simply the beginning of a harem and a very lowly member. He's gentle and quick to learn.... when he WANTS to learn, but hey, he's a cat. On a good day he has a couple of hard, very funny, play times usually in the morning and after his tea. Sometimes he'll go for days being under the weather and mostly sleeping. he's not a lap cat but loves  affection and being talked to along with gentle strokes and just being in the same room.
He's been with me for almost a year. When he came it was 50/50 if he would live. He was malnourished to the point of seizures, he had lost all his fur, muscle and digestion and was a walking skeleton. The FHV manifested in his mouth, gums, tongue being totally covered in finger  length ulcers that didn't respond to treatment. All his teeth except  one fang have been removed. The only thing keeping the ulcers under control is full dose steroids daily, the vet and i have tried to reduce them by tiny increments but it leads to his condition worsening very quickly needing instant vet visit.
As you can imagine he will never be a "well" animal. His digestion  swings from constipation to diarrhoea so i add bran to his food daily and give a weekly dose of cat laxative to try and keep him in balance.
It tends to work.....mostly.  I'm afraid the food that suits his system best lands in the expensive range. I've tried to slowly move him to something cheaper a few times without success.
He will always have to stay indoors  and he is highly infectious to other cats.
For the future the FHV is an unknown. The vet felt he had a couple of years if he lived in a quiet, stress free home ...that was nearly a year ago. But cats are little toughies and can prove the best vet wrong. Any stress or change seems to kick start a flare.
As you can see he's very high maintenance and needs constant watching for symptoms and a very fast response when things start to go wrong ..... and for escapology. but his nature is gorgeous and he's lavish with slobbery kisses.
