During an open riding session on Saturday, August 19, 2017, Fred Nette - owner of the legendary “Fred Bud” - was seriously injured following a startling crash while riding his motorcycle. He was immediately transported by ambulance to the ER at the local hospital. However, due to the severity of his injuries, he had to be transported by helicopter to a Level 1 Trauma Center.

The emergency medical staff determined that Fred had experienced multiple fractures of the cervical spine (neck) with involvement of the spinal cord, as well as partially collapsed lungs, and a lacerated liver. Saturday night while in the ICU trauma unit, Fred was placed in cervical traction to realign the displaced vertebrae and relieve pressure on the spinal cord. The following Sunday morning, Fred underwent successful surgery on his spine to stabilize the remaining vertebral fractures.

Currently, Fred remains in the ICU as he recovers from surgery and prepares to be transferred to a rehabilitation unit. At this moment Fred is still experiencing paralysis affecting his fingers and lower extremities. Although, based on the surgeons encouraging news - related to the condition of the spinal cord and Fred’s unmistakable determination to overcome challenging situations - the prognosis for recovery is hopeful.

Fred has been shown great support from his family and friends, led by his daughter Kristina who has been with him throughout these initial challenging days. Overall, Fred is in good spirits and is ready to take on the challenges in front of him while on his road to recovery.

Fred is generally a private man when it comes to personal matters such as this, but in this instance, the road to recovery which lies ahead of him will not only be physically and emotionally challenging but financially challenging as well. Family and friends are doing their best to support Fred both emotionally and financially but, unfortunately, the financial burden on the family can be momentous when a significant medical event such as this occurs. It is for this reason that I humbly ask you to please support Fred in any form - whether monetary or an extra prayer - so that he may continue his road to recovery. All funds will be used to assist Fred in covering his current and growing medical expenses.

Fred has been a consistent figure in the motocross community for the past 4 decades; always the first to help and/or support a fallen rider. Now is a great opportunity for the motocross community and well-wishers alike to show their solidarity and support for Fred as he picks himself up and attempts to finish this race strong like he always has.

Thank you in advance for your generosity, support, love, and prayers.

Update 10/15/17:
Eight weeks ago, Fred Nette- long standing member of the motocross community- was involved in a motorcycle accident which resulted in an injury to his spinal cord at the level of the mid-cervical spine. Following the accident, Fred was hospitalized at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center where he underwent emergency surgery to stabilize his injuries including fixation of his spinal column to protect further damage to his spinal cord.

Following a week of care in the ICU, Fred was transferred to the OSF rehabilitation center where he received tremendous care from the OSF rehabilitation clinicians. During his 7-week rehabilitation, Fred has shown incredible courage and fortitude. Over the course of rehab, Fred has shown improved functioning of his hands and too much of the disbelief of the OSF medical staff, he has shown an ability to utilize portions of his legs (a great sign for future prognosis).

As expected, Fred has been a favorite among the rehabilitation staff due to his positive attitude and unwavering drive to improve and return to the highest-level of function possible. Some of the highlights of his rehabilitation stay have been: (1) Fred recording his lap times as he utilized his wheelchair to gain additional exercise by wheeling around the rehabilitation floor and (2) Fred walking in small increments with the use of a walker and support from his therapist.

Although Fred is a tough as they come, he would like to acknowledge every single person and family that has supported him over the past 8 weeks. All your thoughts, prayers, and well wishes have helped raise his spirits during a very difficult time. Fred and his family are extremely appreciative of the time and effort that everyone has provided Fred following this life altering event.

Fred was released from OSF Saint Francis Medical Center on Friday, October 13th to his home with the support from his daughter Kristina. Over the past 8 weeks, his home has been modified by his loving family and friends who have donated their time and resources to ensure Fred has a successful transition back into his home.

At this time, I would like to ask everyone to please continue to support Fred though his rehabilitation journey. Although we are overjoyed with the progress he has made thus far, Fred still has a long rehabilitation ahead of him including growing medical expenses. Thank you again for all that have supported and contributed to this GoFundMe campaign. It has been overwhelming to see the tremendous support shown to Fred by his family, friends, and motocross community. Please join me in keeping the #FundFred campaign alive to ensure Fred continues to have the support needed to reach his rehabilitation goals. Thank you all in advance and god bless.
