I came to America one day long, long ago in May of 1996. Since then, I have been an American in most ways: I skinned my knees riding my bike, I ran for class president, and I set off fireworks the 4th of July.
Unfortunately, I am not an American by law. I have yet to apply for citizenship, even though I could have for some time now. Why? The fees. To submit an application for citizenship, one must send a check for $680.
As a lowly grad student who makes slightly (and I mean just a couple hundred dollars) above the cutoff for a fee waiver, I cannot afford to pay such a large chunk of money at once. And so I've put it off... in favor of food and Norton Critical Editions...
BUT NOW things are different. I live in Ohio, a swing state. And if I can gather this money in time, I will apply for citizenship and vote AGAINST TRUMP. (And here you were thinking your money couldn't influence votes..)
On a more serious note, I feel very silly for asking for something like this. At the same time, if reaching out to the mass of patriotic friends I have and asking for a couple of dollars means I get to vote for the first time in November 2016, then I will do it. Would you like somethign for your donation? How about a knitted headband or scarf? I can do that.
The process of earning citizenship takes about six months after the n-400 form is filed. I have this form entirely filled out. I have the necessary passport-style photos. All I need is your help.
Please help me raise this money so that every day for the rest of my life can be America day.
