As we approach the end of the school year, the Frank Porter Graham PTA wants to extend a final THANK YOU to everyone who helped us bring attention to the plight of our playground this year, whether by donating to our fundraising campaign, letter writing, or speaking directly to the board of education.
Our combined efforts made a huge impact. At the end of June 2019, the school district will vote on an agreement with UNC for a long-term lease of the higher ground directly behind the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute. This land is above the flood plain! The school district has also committed more than $400K to the planning and construction of a new playground on this land that will include new structures for all of our preK, K-2, and 3-5 children. The plans are nearly finalized and will then be subject to approval and bidding processes. We anticipate that construction will start late summer or early fall 2019. We are grateful to the school district for taking these decisive actions so quickly and to YOU for bringing their attention to this critical need at our school.
Our renovation efforts will not end there. Having new structures on higher ground will be a tremendous boon, but the surface area that we will gain on higher ground is not enough to accommodate all of the student population at FPG. The PTA will use the funds that you donated to construct a Natural Play Area (possible features in the attached photo), to add environmental features that will improve resilience and reduce recovery time following future flood events, and to resurface the track and playing fields. This work will begin during Summer 2019.

A fines de junio de 2019, el distrito escolar votará sobre un acuerdo con UNC para un arrendamiento a largo plazo del terreno más alto directamente detrás del Instituto de Desarrollo Infantil Frank Porter Graham. ¡Esta tierra está sobre la llanura de inundación! El distrito escolar también ha comprometido más de $ 400K para la planificación y construcción de un nuevo patio de recreo en este terreno que incluirá nuevas estructuras para todos nuestros niños de PreK, K-2 y 3-5. THE ORIGINAL CAMPAIGN:
The playground at Frank Porter Graham Bilingual Elementary was devastated by hurricanes Florence and Michael. The already aging playground structures were damaged and the fencing that kept the playground secure was lost. Our children still do not have access to play structures and, on many days, their recess does not include physical exercise. Because the playground sits in the flood plain, this kind of disaster is likely to repeat.
The playground is so critical for the social and physical development of our children that the FPG PTA is making it the focus of our 2018 End of Year Giving Campaign. We are raising money both to replace the aging and damaged structures and to implement environmental improvements so that the playground will recover faster from future flood events like this one. This multi-year project will carry a total cost of over $400,000. To help us get off to the best possible start in 2019, we are setting an ambitious donation goal this holiday season:
Our goal is to raise $100,000 by the end of 2018
Reaching our $100,000 goal will enable the following playground improvements in 2019:
* Install new play features to replace the aging K-2 structure
* Reroute the walking track
* Address the drainage and erosion issues that plague the entire playground
* Provide seating for outdoor instruction
* Condition the grass playing/soccer fields to enable easier maintenance

El patio de recreos en Frank Porter Graham Bilingüe Escuela Primaria fue seriamente afectado por los huracanes Florence y Michael. Las estructuras ya envejecidas del patio de recreos se dañaron aún más y tambiénse perdió la cerca que mantenía el patio de recreo seguro. Nuestros niños aún no tienen acceso a las estructuras de juego y, durante muchos días, su recreo no incluye el ejercicio físico.
