On Sunday morning, September 23, June Rosilee Jackson Rickman Cotton breathed her last breath.  A shining star of a woman, June was a vital focus of any and every community she joined.  We will gather together at two memorial services in her honor, and this fundraiser is meant to defray the costs of those services and associated expenses such as cremation and family travel.  Thank you for helping us celebrate the life of a truly remarkable woman.

Before I collapse exhausted in my lofty bed I will tell you the first of Mama June's two memorial services went well, with tears, laughter, chicken wings, songs, coffee cake, dancing, flowers. Thank you one and all.

The photo is Mom in her wedding dress. It appeared on the front of the memorial service program.

Gratefully, with your backing in place, I have arranged for music and food for the first memorial service, the one on Sunday, October 14 from 3 to 6 p.m. Food will be provided by The Comfort Zone and Both Ways Cafe. Music will be provided by Soul Shack, playing jazz and blues. June loved all music, but was especially fond of those forms.

Still need to recruit help serving, and figure out what to do about drinks. I'm thinking ginger ale, another June favorite. Stay tuned.

Two memorial services are planned in June Cotton's honor. The first takes place from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, October 14, at the Southeast Seattle Seniors Center, 4655 Holly in Seattle, Washington. (That's at the corner of Rainier and Holly.) June was very active in the SESSC and attended classes, meetings, and other events there almost every day.

The second memorial service is scheduled for November 1 at Bible Baptist Church, 1700 North Drake Road in Kalamazoo, Michigan. No time has been set yet. Though she lived with me in Seattle the last two years of her life, June was a member in good standing of Bible Baptist.

Because of June's belovedness and her vital position in the community, the costs of renting these spaces to use for her memorials is covered. There are other associated expenses, of course, and in order to meet these a friend has created this fundraising campaign.

If you are able to attend either service, that will be wonderful. If you aren't, please send your loving thoughts and prayers.

In lieu of flowers, you may wish to make a donation in June's name to any of the following organizations:

Southern Poverty Law Center
NAACP
Southeast Seattle Senior Center
