A few days ago we lost our friend Tomas Macias to suicide. He left behind Ashley and their two children, Alyeska (3) and Breck (4). Tomas was a hard worker and devoted father who touched all of our lives. He is greatly missed by all that had the privilege of knowing him. His friends and family are still in shock and we question why we didn’t see just how deeply he was hurting. We are all left with the reality that we will never see our friend again.
Tomas’ permanent decision will affect his family forever. The pain of his loss will be an undercurrent in his children’s lives as they grow up without their father. Ashley is now faced with the responsibility of raising two children on her own. Dealing with the day to day expenses of raising a family as a single mother is difficult enough, before considering funeral costs. It falls upon Tomas and Ashley’s family to cover these costs.
We ask that this tragedy be met with compassion and support. We hope to alleviate some of the financial burdens, allowing some time for Ashley to stay home with her children to heal as a family.
Many of us lack understanding about depression and suicide. We have grown up in a culture where there is very little support given to people struggling with mental health disorders.
