Hello friends, As most of you have by now heard, we have another humanitarian crises on our hands. Ethnic based targeting and violence have upended and displaced 72,000 ethnic Oromo and Amhara’s from the Benishangul- Gumuz region and roughly 23 people have been killed in the Wallaga region of Oromia and 3+ in Benishangul-Gumuz so far according to the BBC report on the crises. These numbers are increasing by the hours and lack of sufficient media presence has limited information flow and updated and reliable numbers. So far about 72,000 IDP’s are dispersed in various cities in the Wallaga region. There are camps currently in Gutin, Nekemte, and Limmu and there are more people escaping into Oromia state from Kamashi zone as a heavily armed and dangerous militia is following in pursuit. The stories and news coming out of the area is heartbreaking. There is serious need for medical supplies, food, clothing, shelter, and many basic human needs. There are reports of infants starving, women giving birth in the camps and in the jungle as they are trying to escape and those who are volunteering their resources and body are overwhelmed. These people have lost everything. They’ve suffered immeasurable trauma and are now subjected to unthinkable living conditions and our women and children especially are suffering. So we are asking our community and friends of our community to answer this moral call for action by contributing what we can. As a people who are dispersed across the globe, the best way we can assist our people is by contributing any amount financially. Every penny you can contribute will go a long way in saving a life. These communities are neglected and our support is their last line of defense against death. This is a matter of life and death. It is that serious. We have a moral duty to these defenseless communities to stand by them in their time of urgent need because we are all they have. If we don’t answer this call, we are condemning them to the unthinkable. Please pitch in what you can and if you can’t pitch in financially or are currently in Ethiopia, especially in the surrounding towns to these camps, please set up a clothes/food drive through your iddir, civic, or religious institutions, or even individually and help out in any way you all can. We are each other’s keepers! Let us answer this call. We have a duty to each other!
