Hello, my name is Manuel Desantos. I am 43 years old and was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis when I was around 12 years old.
The past few years have been the worst with my neck and spine fusing, so I can't turn my head or bend my back, then in June of 2014 my right hip went out on me and 6 months later in December of 2014 the left one went out.
It's been so frustrating to lose the abilty to do things that you once loved doing and what most people take for granted.
So for the past 18 months I haven't been able to do any work so I have been selling my stuff to pay bills.
Earlier this year my brother told me about a customer of his that had her hip replaced by Operation Walk USA, a non-profit organization that helps people that don't have insurance get back their mobility.
I applied to Operation Walk USA in May of 2015 and was chosen as a potential candidate in October, went in for an interview in November and was selected to get my hips replaced.
Dr. Goyal and the staff at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital performed the surgery on November 30th and I am now in the healing process, building up my leg muscles, and learning to walk again, doctors said anywhere from 12 weeks to 1 year for a full recovery.
The funds raised will be used to cover my bills and possibly help with getting health insurance so that I can get help with my neck, back, and my shoulders which are showing signs of degraded range of motion .
Any help is very appreciated.
