Flood Victim Recovery Fund

Thanks so much. We have received about $1500 toward our goal but more importantly people have stepped up to help move the shed house, clean it up and clean up RV's. Thanks to all who have assisted with their time and money to help.

Our campground in Slade, Ky was hit by a sudden wall of flood water around 12:30 am Sunday morning Feb 24th. Four people were living in the campground; a couple in a shed house that got completely washed away and is sitting smashed against a tree in the creek. Another camper lost her camper van, and another young man lost a tiny pull behind sleeping camper/cart.  The couple also lost their car.  A few other RV's require major cleaning.  I'm told the water rushed in a matter of a few minutes went from 2 inches to 3 to 4 feet. There was so little time to get out. The campers were trying to salvage equipment, furnishings and their pets and didn't have time to save much.

The shed house was not insurable as it was not designed to be a living quarters but many people in this area do modernize them as living space.  The car also was old so it did not have full coverage and is only good for salvage and the van has minimal insurance but since it was an old van not enough to replace with another older van.

I am trying to raise funds to assist these young people who want to remain in this area. They are looking for jobs or have jobs lined up for this spring when most businesses open here.  I am putting them up in the motel at no charge and have been able to provide them with some money for food and supplies.

The couple does not have any money to pay it off as they were making monthly payments.   Estimates are about $3000 to repair it but not completely sure yet if possible. I would like to offer the owner of the van $2000 in order to compensate for lost dishes, supplies, clothing, kayak, camping gear, stove, etc. The owner of the tiny camper cart could use about $500 to get new bedding and dresser.  My goal is to raise $3000 to help with these expenses and to see how far it goes. I am on the board of a non profit called Giving in the Gorge, a organization a few of us set up to help people in this area. This is our first project. Gofundme did not have it in their data base yet or I would have set up this account under our EIN number but it did not show up yet.  I am looking for the funds immediately as the young people are trying to determine what to do, where to live, whether they can stay in the area, etc.

This was a harrowing experience and I am so thankful they were able to get out in time as they were all sleeping. One of them happened to get up and found the water up over his ankles and walked over to the shed house to wake the couple. By the time they got  up, the water was rushing up over their porch.  I prayed that entire night as I was in contact with them and I couldn't sleep.

I am looking for donations of $15 to $1000! Wishful thinking is always hopeful. Actually, lots of small donations work best. So please anything you can spare would be great. If extra money comes in it will go to the Giving in The Gorge non profit organization. You will be hearing more about this organization soon.
