Flint Water Crisis Relief YLDEP
Donation protected
Despite Flint's water supplying being contaminated 4 years ago, lead levels in schools are continuing to rise (1). Recently, following the initial rulings issued by lower federal courts throwing out 2 class action lawsuits filed by Flint citizens, the Supreme Court has backed the ruling of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reviving the litigation (2). New studies have also provided evidence to possible claims to youth brain damage, as 1 in 10 third graders educated in Flint's 3rd grade primary schools have scored proficient in reading, compared to 2014's 4:10 (3).
Here at the YLDEP (Youth Leadership & Diversity Education Program), we as a group consisting of metro-Detroiters in high school are attempting to bring relief to the struggling families during this catastrophe which has been under-reported for the past nearly 2 years. A congressional grant of an alleged 120 million approved by the Senate in 2016 has been unspoked of since, with repairs being sluggish and inefficient, we as a community must continue to stand together in support until all those suffering receive final alleviation (4). With the support of Detroit Lion Ameer Abdullah and local shops around the community, we will be collecting cases of bottled water with monetary donations being sent to the City of Flint in support for the second year in a row. Last year we succesfully donated hundreds of bottled water, and gathered around 3 grand in monetary funds. Please read the last two linked articles for news coverage from last year's drive.
