Hi everyone! So my birthday is coming up next week. I really wanted to do something different, something to give back and help real people make an actual and immediate difference. I thought for a while about what we could do together to make tomorrow better than today. I decided on education.
This is a topic that I am extremely passionate about. My entire life, nothing was more important than learning. I grew up in a very small community in New England that didn't have much in the way of state support. Comparing our schools to those in the big suburbs or cities down south was like night and day. We had so little and they had so much.
I actually got lost in one of those schools on a visit during a theatre event. They had two gyms! I never even found the library. I'm sure it was bigger than my entire high school was.
But I know, despite these limitations, I was better off than a lot of kids in the U.S. I had just enough at school and endless support at home, that the love of reading was instilled in me at an early age. When a child can love words, it really does open the door to endless possibilities.
So I want to raise money to donate to First Book . They are a non-profit organization twenty-five years old, who have been donating books and educational resources to children in need because they too understand that change and a better future actually begins with our future. Education is key, and they have to date given over 160 million books to schools. They touch at least 3 million children on an annual basis, and 97% of all proceeds go toward their mission.
They provide for teachers and educators so that they can help children reach proficiency in reading during their most critical, grades-school years. And they understand the need for diversity in children's fiction and are tackling it head-on by offering over 2,000 titles (nearly 1/3 of their inventory) that touch on topics such as children with special needs, LGBTQ issues, representing POC, and more.
I think raising funds for their cause would be an incredible thing for all of us to do together. The world has been full of so much hate lately, and we can only combat that with love. So let's show all kids out there, no matter what walk of life they come from, we love them and want them to reach for the stars. I think a $250 goal is something we can do, and it would be an incredible gift to me if you took part. Even $1 would be humbling. If you cannot donate, believe me, I understand, and hope you will at least share the link.
