OUR MISSION:
FireWise of Southwest Colorado inspires, motivates, educates and serves individuals, organizations and communities joining together to protect lives and property from wildfire.
WHAT THE FUNDS ARE FOR:
Montezuma County has eliminated support for the FireWise Neighborhood Ambassador Program which provides education and technical support to help residents prepare for wildfires.
Unfortunately, this leaves a $14,500 gap in 2018 funds to support wildfire preparedness in Montezuma County.
To address this shortfall, FireWise of Southwest Colorado is hosting LIVING with WILDFIRE a resource and educational fair and fundraiser on April 28th at the Mancos Brewery. The event will include educational booths, demonstrations, live bands (dancing) including the Afrobeatniks and Carute Roma, and live and silent auctions.
We hope to see you there! If you are unable to make it, please consider making a donation and become a Friend of FireWise.
Your financial gift and support are greatly appreciated. Please consider sharing this campaign with your friends and family on Facebook, email, Twitter, and text messages. Each share can make a real difference! ALL DONATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE.

OUR PURPOSE:
• Provide a coordinated, consistent, interagency, and consensus-driven approach to wildland fire education.
• Encourage and motivate homeowners and communities to take an active role in preparing for wildfire.
• Coordinate the development and delivery of key messages.
• Facilitate information sharing across agencies and jurisdictional lines.
• Establish and grow partnerships with private and public entities that have a stake in wildfire prevention and education.
• Develop resources and support for educational and other community led activities.
OUR HISTORY:
Southwest Colorado began an interagency effort to improve readiness and response to wildfires with the release of Community Wildfire Plans for the five-county region in May 2002. Then the unthinkable happened. On June 9, 2002, a small fire started just north of Durango. The fire burned for six weeks before being contained and had burned more than 70,000 acres and destroyed 56 homes.
In 2003, Durango Fire & Rescue Authority hosted a national workshop where FireWise of Southwest Colorado was born.
Today, FireWise has part-time coordinators in La Plata, Montezuma, and Archuleta Counties and more than 158 Neighborhood Ambassadors. FireWise works closely with a variety of partners including the Colorado State Forest Service, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Offices of Emergency Management, and local Fire Protection Districts. We operate under the 501c3 status of the San Juan Mountains Association which serves as our fiscal agent.
