Trailer Hitch Wounds Fatal

 Thunder Bay, ON
Barbara Kentner was the victim of a drive by assault on January 28th by a Caucasian man who shouted “I got one” after throwing a very large trailer hitch at her body from the passenger side of a moving vehicle.  18 year Brayden Bushby has since been charged with Assault Causing Bodily Harm with a Weapon and was released February 21st on bail.

Barbara was walking home with her sister when it happened.  They did not know the man prior to the assault.

In Thunder Bay racism is an ongoing problem.  In the Indigenous community, having objects thrown at them while walking is all too common. The assault was not labeled a hate crime.

Barb has been in the hospital since January and hasn’t healed from her wounds.  Her organs are shutting down and her health is deteriorating rapidly.  Doctors have done all they can and by her own wishes she has returned home to die in the care of loved ones.

My name is Deanne Hupfield.  I grew up with Barb and her family.  I’ve created this Gofundme to help support the family in their final days with Barb. Barb is going to pass soon and my heart is broken for her and her family.  Through this Gofundme I hope to give Barb some peace of mind knowing that her family is financially supported through this traumatic event.  The funds raised will be used to offset costs of the funeral and family members’ travel to Thunder Bay before she passes.

Any little bit will help.  Our timeline to raise the funds is critical.

Miigwech. (Thank you in the Ojibway Language)

Update April 26th;  Requested by the family the beneficiary has been changed to Stanley Vlotaros. He is a long time trusted family friend.  The family plans to use the funds for Barbs  final funeral expenses and what ever is left over will be put in a trust for Barbs teenage daughter.

The family is so very grateful for everything contributed.   Thank you so much for everything!

I spoke to Barbara yesterday and she is deeply touched by all the support. She wanted to say Thank you and that she is very grateful <3.

I apologize for not updating more often. I had a baby 2 weeks ago and am pre-occupied caring for my new daughter.

I too am so touched by all the love, support and prayers being sent on this Gofundme page. I grew up in Thunder Bay. Myself and mostly all of my Indigenous friends have had objects thrown at them. I happened to me when I was a teen (mid 90's) till I moved away 10 years ago.

The success of this Gofundme page gives me hope that things can change. It says that people do care about us Indigenous women.

Chi Miigwech again from the bottom of my heart <3

I am disgusted by some of the comments on here. How anyone can say these things as a family prepares for a senseless loss while a woman lay dying is beyond me. People are thoughtless and cruel. Thoughts and prayers to Barbara Kentner and her relations. I am sorry that you continue to endure such malice.

Whether she had prior health issues makes absolutely NO difference! Whether its caused by the injuries she recieved, or the injuries aggravating pre existing health problems, the end result is still going to be the same for this poor woman Shame on you for trying to deny her the right to raise money to prepare for whatever is to come.

To those who condemn the giving of money to this family, I ask you one question. When did money become your god? You think that money is worth more than a human life? This woman's life, and the family she will leave behind are more valuable than anything, and everything, you have to "offer". My heart-felt condolences to Barbara and her family. No one -- ever -- should have to go through something as barbaric and brutal as this.

It sickens me to read the negative comments. A woman was the victim of a hate crime that is fatal and people are still spreading hate. There are no words to express how sorry we are for you and your family. I hope you find comfort with your loved ones.

To those saying "you don't even know if she'll die, she could pull out of this still" or worse, "how do you know for sure it's the act that is the sole reason"..HOW DO EITHER OF THOSE THINGS MATTER?! If she pulls through, that's AMAZING. And even if she had some other issues underlying, it's absolutely POSITIVE that the heinous assault at the very least offset and made worse anything that could have been going on! And that's at the very LEAST!. The doctors aren't saying that she has any other problems contributing to this, they're saying that her organs are shutting down BECAUSE OF THE ASSAULT. How DARE you act like people shouldn't be trying to help and support this family who is 99.9% likely to lose her because of a filthy, racist act!! If you don't want to support, FINE, but shut your mouths to those who DO want to support! Nobody is being "tricked out their money" here! We have brains (and hearts!!), we 100% understand the situation so thanks but no thanks on your shitty comments!!!! I will DEFINITELY BE donating on Thursday!! Whether a miracle happens and she pulls through or not!! To the family: I am SO VERY SORRY YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH THIS! There is an epidemic of racism and discrimination to our country's First Nations people, and we need to do better to end it!!! We have to work harder to stand with them and be allies! The government isn't listening to them, so the rest of us have work to do!

Very sorry this happened Barbara & that her family is suffering. Senseless and very shameful. I hope you find some peace with your family. *Laureen Louise Ann Kahgee, unless you are a doctor or a nurse or have any clue of what happened that night; it would be sensible to keep your opinions to yourself, especially when you seem to have a lot of health issues/anger yourself. Very unnecessary & ignorant.

We need not to read the negativity. We need to continue to focus on the welfare of this young woman. Together we can move mountains. Rather pray for the souls of those who speak such hate. Focus on the positive reflections of so many wanting to help this family. This young woman did not deserve this hateful act, nor does she deserve to have her life shortened. My hope is that our medical community will step up and look at the medical records to see if this truly is all that can be done for her. I pray for this family and we need to continue to encourage them and lift them up through this most difficult time in their lives.

I am sorry, I did not mean to sound mean nor cruel and pray for her and her family as well!!This city is filled with hateful people but theres no excuse to sound how I did I did not mean that she isnt deserving. By all means every living being on this earth is deserving of compassion and generosity when warranted. I would not want to see anyone I love in her situation, I myself have been yelled at and called names just walking down the road. However whenrequesting donations for things like this, health situations, arent we to be truthful and open and honest aboit the whole situation? I dont know her nor do I judge her, I dohave compassion unlike some may think! I apologize for not being more clear!

I am so mad, sad and disgusted by this person. He committed murder, not manslaughter. He deserves a hanging. Why do people judge us? Everyone that judges us and thinks we're bad should look in the mirror. They came to this continent and took over. Come judgement day, watch out! Yes, you'll get it worse than what you doled out. And I can say worse, but not.
