Danielle & Sasha Meitiv VS CPS

On April 12, 2015, Danielle and Alexander Meitiv's two children, ages six and ten, were abducted by police and CPS while playing at a local park. The Meitivs have been under investigation by the Maryland CPS since early January 2015 after they allowed their "free range" children walk home from a local park. Police picked these two capable children along their way, and took them to the house. In addition to the Police, CPS showed up and demanded that the father, Alexander, sign a 'safety plan', "pledging that he would not leave his children unsupervised until the following Monday, when CPS would follow up." Alexander initially refused, indicating that he would first need to consult a lawyer. However, he changed his mind when the CPS agent threatened to immediately and forcibly remove the children if he failed to comply."
Danielle and Alexander are both responsible, dedicated parents who have decided the course of action they feel is best in raising their children. Speaking of the balance they have struck between freedom and safety, Danielle explains it this way: “The world is actually even safer than when I was a child, and I just want to give them the same freedom and independence that I had — basically an old-fashioned childhood,” she said. “I think it’s absolutely critical for their development — to learn responsibility, to experience the world, to gain confidence and competency.”
