The Fight of Liam (Doug)'s Life

Donation protected
We, Liam’s friends, have created this page on behalf of his family to help him battle through a traumatic brain injury and to assist him on his road to recovery.

Liam is a role model to his younger twin brothers Eoin and Gearoid, best friend to his older sister Caitríona, and loving son of Kathleen and Dave. Liam holds a remarkable love and respect for his family, and his extensive circle of friends is a true testament of his character. Liam, or Doug as he is affectionately known to his friends, is originally from Ballincollig. Co. Cork in Ireland but has been working as a Civil Engineer for the past 8 years in Vancouver, BC in Canada.

Liam's Story:
Friday October 5th, 2018, Liam suffered a traumatic brain injury after a freak accident involving an electric scooter while holidaying in Los Angeles, California.  He was rushed to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Centre in a critical condition by local emergency paramedics, where he was diagnosed with a fractured skull, subdural bleeding and traumatic swelling of the brain.  Doctors performed an emergency decompressive craniectomy procedure where a section of his skull was removed to relieve intracranial pressure. The treatment forced Liam into a medically induced coma. Consequential battles with pneumonia and other direct complications have prevented the medical team from reducing the levels of sedation, and he is now expected to be induced for an extended period in the Intensive Care Unit in LA.

The O’Connell family are the epitome of a selfless, loving family and nothing could prepare them for such a tragic and devastating occurrence.  We know how cherished Liam’s family are to him and understand that they will be a vital part of his recovery. He is currently being treated in the ICU unit in the USA and his rehabilitation will likely be in Canada. His family reside in Ireland and will absorb enormous costs during his road to recovery.

Doctors still do not know the extent of the brain injury or the long-term implications. Any donation, kind words of support, or sharing of his story would be greatly appreciated. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for your support and love.

We will continue to update this page with Liam’s recovery progress as we receive more information.
