Fern's Medical Expenses

Donation protected

My name is Kim, I live in North Louisiana with my fiance, baby boy, and our six pets. Of our six, four are rescues. Over the course of the last four years, my fiance and I have taken in, adopted, or found homes for 20 different cats + dogs. While it's not always easy to take animals in, we do it and we do our best to do it right.

Every animal that we take in goes to the veterinarian for a full check up, shots, and if we can afford it, spay / nueter. Even when we do not plan to keep a neglected beast, we approach each as if we were. We nurse them to health. Our hope for these animals is to give them the best chance at finding a loving forever home and to be happy and healthy.

On Saturday, January 9, 2016, I picked up a female hound mix off of the highway. Though I had sworn off picking up anymore animals, she had a very serious limp and it was obvious she was injured.

When I called out to her, she came straight to me. I loaded her up in the trunk of my SUV but it wasn't long before she climbed over the seat and found a cozy spot next to my son. She was gentle with him and sat quiety on our trip home.

We decided to name her Fern. She has been so very gentle and loving not only with our son but also our other dogs and even our four cats.

This morning I brought Fern to the vet for an evalutation.  They concluded that she has a broken radius on her front left arm. They believe that she was hit by a car and that she had been suffering with a broken leg for at least three weeks.

She also tested positive for heart worms. News I was really hoping we wouldn't get. Her less serious issues are dermal sores from multiple ticks bites, scrapes and cuts from her intitial accident causing the broken bone, and gingivitus due to malnutrtion.

I don't know how long Fern spent out suffering or what kind of home she came from. But I am glad that I found her. I believe with all of my heart that all creatures deserve a chance at a happy life.

That's what my family intends to provide for Fern. But unfortunately we are unable to afford all of her medical needs.

Her initial appointment today totaled $461.78.

This included; exam + services, heartworm snap test, digital radiograph (x-rays), proheart injection (for prevention of any more heartworms), casting of front left leg, Doxycycline Chewtabs (for heartworm treatment), Rimadyl Chews (for inflamation and pain in broken leg), Bravecto Tablet (flea and tick preventative), and Clic Collar.

The $461.78 did not include;
Vaccinations: $46.50
Spay: $268.90
FULL Heartworm Treatment: $823.50

Total costs for Ferns medical bills / treatments: $1600.68

While my fiance and I try to do our best for every animal we rescue, this is not an expense that we can afford at this time.

We undertand that not all can take in animals in need. But for those of us that do, we sometimes need a little help. We are so humbly asking for yours. Any dollar is a big dollar to us right now and everything is appreciated.

With sincere thanks,
