Our mission is "to provide Juneau's school-age children access to food." We are a cooperative that came together to help minimize the competition for the food on grocery shelves, and to add some consistency to the program. Through volunteers we are currently serving approximately 500 children in Juneau's public school system, grades K to 12. We provide weekend backpack bags to children in the primary grades (K-8) and food closets to the high schools. Although 500 is a large number we have to consider Juneau lucky in that the number of children in our city experiencing food insecurities is under 15%. The national number is 20%. We also provide breakfast to Floyd Dryden and Dzantik'I middle schools.
Average cost per bag is $3.25 or $1625.00 per week. Each bag includes: 2 breakfast items, 2 lunch items and 2 snacks. We received a sizable donation that is dwindling down and we need your help to keep our program going.
The schools appreciate this program as children come to school on Monday ready to learn and not worrying about when they are going to be fed. It does not appear to be a lot of food that we are giving these kids especially if you look in the average home's cupboard, but to these children it makes a world of difference.
If you would like to contribute to our program, any donation would be gratefully appreciated.
Doubling our efforts, doubling your contribution
The Benito and Frances C. Gaguine Foundation has awarded $10,000 as a matching grant opportunity. Any donation will be matched up to this amount. $10 becomes $20, $50 becomes $100........
