My name is John Philips, the owner of The Mansion Restaurant and am humbly asking our community to help raise funds to aide my best friend and general manager of 15 years. John Drakopoulos was involved in a devastating car accident on the morning of December 30th and is currently in critical condition. Over the coming weeks John will have to undergo reconstructive surgery in order to repair a skull fracture in addition to several other severe injuries. The funds collected during this campaign will be given directly to his wife, Magdalena Drakopoulos and five-year-old son.
Our intention is to provide her with the ability to maintain some quality of life as well as provide for their child as John fights to recover. With limited health coverage and and mounting expenses both John and his family will need all the support possible. Johns recovery is uncertain and will take many months of procedures and therapy. Thank all of you in advance for your help and support. We truly appreciate your love and compassion.

Thank you everyone for your tremendous support over the past few months. We are overwhelmed by the genuine concern and involvement of so many of our community members both on FB and here on the upper east side.

I am happy to report that John is making a strong recovery and seem to be doing as well as can be expected. John was released from the hospital early last week and will now begin on the road to what we hope will be a full recovery. This Monday we have our first series of doctors’ appointments. Our first set involves the spinal injuries and establishing a time frame for when we can remove the supportive collar which he has been trapped in since the accident. We are also hopeful that the feeding peg will be removed in the coming days which will certainly provide john with a level of comfort he has not had in some time now.

We will continue to move forward with therapy and treatment in waitful anticipation of returning John back to his old self. Thank you all again for you love and generous support.

We wanted to take a minuet to thank everyone for this unbelievable turnout of support for John. Specifically, I want to extend a special thanks to our friends at the NYPD, Yorkville our home, Mr. John Winkelman and each person who has called or visited us to offer their well wishes.
I also wanted to post a quick update as to Johns current condition. We still have a very long road ahead of us. John remains in an induced coma and will remain there for minimally the next two weeks. We are battling unusually high (intercranial) pressure in his head which has impacted his brain. Unfortunately, the best way to maintain safe levels is by keeping him comatose. We are still uncertain as to the extent of the traumatic brain injury and will not know anything until they can safely take him off the respirator and out of the coma. On the other hand, the reconstructive surgery on his skull and face seem to have been a success. The unbelievable doctors at Weill Cornell were able to repair his eye and ear drum and are looking forward to the next round of surgery which include the repair of two spinal fracture.
Over the coming weeks and months Magdalena (wife), Greg (brother), Chris (sister), his extended family and myself will be at the hospital everyday helping John fight to make his recovery both swift and complete. We are so incredibly grateful for the wonderful staff at Cornell Medical Center and for all your love and support. With great humility we thank you!
