John L. Ryan of Greenfield, Indiana, formerly of Fort Wayne, died Wednesday, December 23, 2015 in Hospice Care at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield. He was 51.

John retired as Operations Manager at Indianapolis Fruit in Indianapolis in 2014. A 1982 graduate of North Side High School in Fort Wayne, he attended IPFW, then began his career in the produce industry working for Don May Produce of Fort Wayne, Super Valu Foods in Fort Wayne as manager of its perishable produce operation and Chiquita Brands, where he was director of the ripening operation in Long Beach/Gulfport Mississippi.

John is survived by his wife, Sonia Avila of Indianapolis; Son, Christopher of Lafayette; Daughter, Amy, of Fort Wayne; Brother, Blane (Diane) Ryan of Monroeville; Brother, Mark (Cindy) Ryan of Fort Wayne and sister, Anne (Rick) Rice of Fort Wayne as well as his mother, Alice Ryan of Fort Wayne. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul J. Ryan in 2000.

He loved his family and friends with unwavering loyalty. He was a lifelong Chicago Bears fan and enjoyed fishing, camping and cooking, and music, expecially rock music, blues and jazz. John was well known for his creativity in the kitchen as well as his love of spicy food and his knack for growing surprisingly hot peppers.

John donated his body to the Indiana University Anatomical Studies program ; he will be interred at the Catholic Cemetery in Fort Wayne at a later date.  A memorial service for John will be held  at St. Jude Catholic Church, 2155 Randallia Drive in Fort Wayne on Saturday, January 9 at 1:30pm. A Celebration of Life Gathering for friends and family will be held at a later date.

John received excellent, compassionate care from IU Methodist Hospital, The Simon Center for Cancer Care, and the Hospice care unit at Hancock Regional Hospital. It was his wish that his body be donated to science and as much research be gleaned from his remains in order that a cure may possibly be found so that ultimately, others may live.

The money raised through this account will be used to place John's remains, once returned to our family, in the Catholic Cemetery in Fort Wayne next to the plots where his father, Paul lies, and where is mother, Alice, is scheduled to be interred, estimated to be between 18 and 24 months from now.  Any remaining funds after John's remains reach his final resting place will be donated in his name to his other preferred memorials and his wife and children.

Other preferred memorials are to The Simon Center for Cancer/IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and the Rex A. Pasko Hospice Endowment through the Hancock Regional Hospital Foundation in Greenfield, Indiana, as well as the Little Sisters Of The Poor in Indianapolis .
