Help Coegi get to Stockholm Fringe!

Donation protected
Coegi is a music and dance collective that was formed in September 2014 by recent graduates Grace Nicol, Theo Samsworth, Wilfred Petherbridge and Ben Hauke. As a company we have toured to Falmouth, Northampton and London. The company performed in Resolution at The Place, London and have been involved in three residencies and a sharing. Coegi, was formed with the ambition of marrying movement and music as equal collective and creative partners.

We are currently developing our piece Rural Living into a 45 min production to perform at Stockholm Fringe with new company dancers, Lucy Freeman and Valerie Ebuwa. We have support from working with Dance Research Studio and The London Bubble for the research and development process but need your help to get there! This funding will cover our travel and accommodation so is vitally important to us being able to perform at Stockholm Fringe.

 Meet the team!

Our choreographer, Grace Nicol, is currently an Associate Artist at Dance Research Studio, where she also supports Professional Development activities. She works on The London Bubble’s ‘Creative Homes’ project, making interdisciplinary performances with elderly participants (performances at The Albany and The Bubble). Graduating from Falmouth University 2011-2014 , with a First Class Choreography degree, she was awarded The Longfield Cup for ‘socially engaged practice’. Since leaving Falmouth, she has continued her interest and investigation into interdisciplinary practices; choreographing for Spontaneous Combustion Festival (2014) and setting up Coegi music and dance. Among others, Grace has worked with Gabriella Brandstetter, Jacky Lansley and Kirsten Marr.

Our composer and performer, Wilfred Petherbridge has been involved in visual arts, theatre and choreographic practices since graduating in 2013 (Falmouth University). As an instrumentalist his interests lie in the continued exploration of the contemporary approach to brass music through the use of electronics in live and recorded performance. He has previously worked with Gary Clarke, Nitin Sawhney and Impermanence Theatre Dance.

Theo Samsworth trained in contemporary dance from a young age and went on to complete his BA (Hons) in Contemporary Dance at Trinity Laban and Postgraduate Diploma in Performance, as an apprentice with Tavaziva Dance, from London Contemporary Dance School. Theo joined Tavaziva as a company member in 2014. Theo went on to complete his Masters degree with Distinction at LCDS before performing in ‘Król Roger’ at the Royal Opera House. Theo has also worked choreographers including Theo Clinkard, James Cousins and Adam Rutherford. For this production Theo will be taking a more supportive role, helping to develop the piece.

Ben Hauke is a percussionist and music producer based in South East London.  His musical interests lie in the use of sampling and found sound. Ben has been drumming for 12 years and since 2009 he has also relentlessly produced and released down tempo, sample heavy music.  After graduating from his degree in Creative Technology, Ben has produced sound design for a range of theatre productions and short films whilst making a greater mark on the London dance music circuit.  This has included producing remixes for artists such as King Krule and developing my own specific musical style with his last release on Melodica Records, Wari ep.  He has recently produced remix's for Farout Recordings (London) and performed at Late at the Tate.

Lucy Freeman graduated from Falmouth University in 2014 with a First Class Honours Degree in Dance Performance. Whilst studying for her BA Lucy undertook an exchange period at the Conservatorio Superior de Danza de Valencia, Spain.  This year Lucy has been a part of the international touring company Mapdance, whilst gaining her Masters Degree in Dance Performance at the University of Chichester.  Lucy is now a part of London’s Coegi Company as well as Plymouth’s Exim Dance Company.  She has worked with Choreographers such as Lila dance, Ofra Idel, Rick Nodine and Jonathan Burrows.

Valerie Ebuwa received her BA Hons degree from London Contemporary Dance School in 2014. Since then she went on to perform on the main stage at Sadlers well in 2015 Breaking Convention and has performed and taught internationally in Brazil and USA. She currently dances for Boadicea and has her own dance collective called Eclectics.
