Rolando Sistoso Medical Funds

$1,885 of $3,000 goal

Raised by 28 people in 10 months
My wife's father, Rolando Sistoso my father-in-law has developed an illness which is still not fully diagnosed. He is being released from a three-day hospital stay where they performed an ultrasound on him and found a spot on his liver about the size of around a quarter.

He had to travel away from his home to get this procedure done and needs to have a biopsy performed but the hospital he is leaving cannot do that so he must go to another hospital that can do it.

Right now, some pain medication he's been getting is keeping him from feeling discomfort. He can continue on that medication for a time but it's not the resolve needed.

He and his family ( that's my wife Bella in the photo with him from back in 2011, the last time she's seen him in person ) live in a very small, rural province in the Philippines. They are the typical family from the area of Baroy, Lanao del Norte. Living on what he can earn going to the sea fishing on his small boat.

Nothing nearby is able to help his medical needs, so he must go to a bigger city for any care and for further diagnosis. With a couple of family members to accompany him, he is leaving from Iligan City back home ( Lanao del Norte ) but needs to travel to Cagayan de Oro, where the hospital there can do the needed biopsy and determine his medical needs moving forward.

The money that Bella and I were able to send was depleted when the bill from the hospital from Iligan City was given to him early today. They have only enough left to get home. He should be headed to Cagayan de Oro now, instead, they will need to go home.

Simply put, we need financial help so he can travel to Cagayan de Oro ( CDO ) and get the needed tests' done to move forward and find out what the bigger picture is.

Rolando is a loving father and husband and his family are doing all they can there in the Philippines to get him where he needs to be and making sure he is a comfortable as possible.

Funding his needs are going to fall on Bella and me, so we ask if you can help to please do so.

Right now, I just need to get this started as he needs to get to CDO and have testing done ASAP!

-- I am setting up to do art for any donation $100.00+ and will post that up later today or by tomorrow if anyone is interested. --

He passed this morning.

Bella received a messenger video call this morning about 8am EST from her sister Vicky. Her father asked for Bella. He was home, in bed and had oxygen to help him breathe. He could not speak much, only whispers.

We were taking Jacob to kindergarten when the call came so he saw him too.

Bella and I got back home. About 9:10 he just passed away on the call.

Any future funds will go towards his funeral and getting Bella’s passport renewed and a ticket to the Philippines to be with her family for a while.

Her father leaves behind a wife, 7 kids and many grandchildren.

Thank you all for your help and prayers.

I don’t know what else to write at this time, so I’ll close.

May God be with you Rolando Sistoso. Know you were loved by many! ❤️

It's been a while since the last update.

During the time between the last update and this one, Bella's father was able to make the trip to CDO but had no luck getting admitted to a hospital for a biopsy.

They were told he would also need a referral from the doctor in Iligan City who saw him and did the first ultrasound. So lost time and resources.

And... when they could head back, they had to deal with a typhoon ( just like a hurricane here ) during the same time frame the USA was dealing with Florence. The roads there are not built well and transportation isn't prepared for the bad weather either.

Finally, when they did get to Iligan City again from CDO, the doctor who saw her dad asked how he was feeling and he had some upset stomach, so the doctor decided to ignore the liver problem and sent dad home with some advice for "ulcers" and some Rx medicine for stomach acid relief.

-- This didn't sit well with me as the big picture is the liver problem and it wasn't addressed to my knowledge. Forgive me if my tone on this is a bit terse but I'm quite upset at the way things went and the time and money wasted on the process of getting a diagnose to his problem.

Rolando was home only for a day and got a major pain in his stomach... he was transported the next morning to CDO by an ambulance and after finding that some of the hospitals there were full they finally landed at one a bit further, altho still in the CDO area, in Carmen CDO.

Once admitted he was scheduled for a CT Scan and it was done. The doctor's he saw there told him they were not able to give him a diagnosis for the results and had to have a liver specialist come in to look at the results and consult Bella's dad.

We just heard this morning that her father has Stage IV liver cancer and that he has approximately 6 months to live.

You can imagine the reaction to hearing this.

All of your donations and what extra we can and have put in have got us this far and we are still expecting another bill from the hospital in Carmen CDO when they release her dad... which we have no day for, but since they don't believe they will be able to do anything but give him painkillers and put him on a mild diet of food, I'm expecting he will be dismissed on Monday or Tuesday to go home.

-- If you have donated to this cause, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts and this also goes for Bella's family, mom, sisters, and brothers in the Philippines.

If you can donate, any amount will be used towards the next steps which we will take one day at a time.

I'm trying to update the situation as well as I can, however getting information is sometimes hard and I try to make sure I have the facts right before updating.

If you can pray for Rolando Sistoso, thank you. If you can contribute, thank you.

All your prayers, thots and donations are so helpful.

Thank you everyone for what you have helped do.

He's an update from Bella's sister, Vicky.

Mr. Sistoso is now in CDO along with Vicky and her older sister.
[ The Philippines is 24 hours ahead of us here on the east coast, so our "pm" is their "am" and vice-versa. ]

They arrived yesterday mid-afternoon sometime and went to a government-run hospital that would not be as expensive as a "private" one. After waiting all day to get seen, they told her father they would need to do their own ultrasound to even admit him... BUT, since it was the end of the day, they would not get him in a bed and they advised him to come back on Monday and wait in line again to see someone.

This is well and fine, but there is still not a guarantee that he would be admitted for tests' due to crowding and full beds. It's pretty frustrating to say the least, especially when you're concerned about your loved ones. [ Yes, I understand there are others trying to get into the hospital too... so I'm not uncaring to their needs just giving some perspective. ]

They are staying [ as I understand ] at an extended family members house for now.

So, the solution is to send her father to a private hospital and hopefully, he can get admitted there in the morning and start getting the needed testing and the diagnoses needed to see just what we are dealing with.

Going on what we understand this will be around $1,800.00 PHP per day [ about $35-40.00 per day USD ] and that's only for a bed in a room, not for any testing expense and doctor care, etc.

We pray he will be able to get admitted and have a doctor helping him by tomorrow morning.

I'm writing this update so you who have donated can understand where the money you've given is going and where it will be spent going forward.

The private hospital was not planned but has become a necessary need.

We will continue to give everyone updates as we get them.

Bella and I thank you all greatly for your generous giving and sharing of this fundraiser! If you feel like sharing this, please feel free... every bit helps.

If you believe in prayer, please keep Rolando Sistoso in your prayers.

Respectfully -
Bella and John Beatty

Thanks to everyone who has donated or shared this GoFundMe page. We are going to be able to move Bella's father, Rolando towards the hospital in CDO so he can have a biopsy done.
The attached map is the distance they must travel to have this done. You can also see the city of Iligan, where his ultrasound was done. We had hoped that the funds we had sent out of pocket would be enough to let him continue from there... but, they were only enough to cover the bill, purchase his prescriptions and have some left over for food.
More updates as we communicate with Bella's sister, Vicky who is doing a great job keeping us posted on what the situation is there in the Philippines.
