Our mother, Judy Fraley, is in the severe / late stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Like many families that have experienced this illness, it was met by ours with confusion, embarrassment, and reluctance to accept its grip on my mom and to receive a diagnosis for many years. If you know anything about Alzheimer’s, you may know that it is progressive, and there is no cure, so there is not much we could have done to slow its progress or change her current condition. However, we are remiss that we could have been more prepared for this moment, because things are really bad for our mom and dad right now.
Within the last month, our mom has been experiencing hallucinations, cannot recognize us, will not eat, sleeps most of the time, and is combative. She cannot be left alone for even a minute and needs around the clock care. Her dementia and confusion is so strong at times, we are concerned for her safety, as she is acting out and confronting loved ones. You know what a loving, kind, and blissful soul our mom was, and so it is clear the disease has a strong hold of her.
Earlier this month we spoke with and observed an array of facilities from fancy to awful, and found a place that we feel could provide the proper care at a price within our family’s range. We were fortunate to find a facility within a few miles of my dad’s home, called Glenn Park at Monrovia. We met the director and staff, observed the facility, saw the rooms, and learned about the program, which we think is a very good one for our mom and we are hopeful that she can stabilize and maybe even thrive there. It is so close that our dad and family could go to see her every day. The monthly price is $3,500 for a private room, which would allow for unlimited visiting hours. The director assessed our mom last week and accepted her into the program, and our dad put down a deposit on a room that we liked when we visited.
This has all happened so fast, and while our mom needs immediate care, our dad is not financially prepared to place her in the facility and won't be able to for the next couple months.
Many family and friends have asked about our mom’s condition and have asked what you could do to help. We appreciate your concern so much, and do not expect anything, however, it is a priority to get our mom placed at Glenn Park at Monrovia immediately. We need $8,000 for 2 months of care and extra fees, while our father is setting up his finances to pay for the rest of her care. The reason its urgent to place her at Glenn Park now is she is not getting the proffessional care she needs, and could potentially be a danger to herself or others if she is not in a safe environment as soon as possible. We are very concerned for the welfare of both of our parents who are having such a hard time battling this horrible disease. A small donation of even $10 to $20 would get us closer to the goal and will be greatly appreciated.
