Floyd's Emergency Surgery & Rehabilitation

BIO:
Meet Floyd! Our bright and lovable pup is about two years old and was given a second chance at life thanks to Don’t Furry, Be Happy Rescue. He and his brother were rescued just in time from Monterey, Texas, where they and along with other strays were faced with the reality of being put down. Floyd’s incredible intelligence and striking features hint at a special mix—his mother was a Boxer and we strongly believe he is also Belgian Malinois. His intelligence, loyalty and eagerness to learn make him a one-of-a-kind companion.

THE FAMILY:
We’re a family of five from Toronto, Ontario—Ryne, Diana, Leeloo, Daenerys and Kanéda—and we couldn’t be more grateful to share our story with you! Sometimes, life brings you the most beautiful surprises when you least expect them and that’s exactly what happened when we met Floyd.
From the moment we laid eyes on him, we just new—one of those heartwarming moments where you just know. Floyd was the missing piece our family didn’t even realize we needed. Without hesitation, we welcomed him into our home as a foster and it wasn’t long before we knew he was meant to stay with us forever. On Valentine’s Day 2024, we made it official and adopted him.

THE ACCIDENT:
On February 14, 2025—Valentine’s Day—our city was covered in a beautiful blanket of fresh snow, nearly 30 cm had fallen over the past 48 hours. It was the perfect winter wonderland for Floyd’s morning adventure, so Diana and Kanéda drove over to one of his favorite places—the local dog park.
As always, Floyd was full of energy, happily exploring and making new & playing with friends. Nearing the end of his playtime, he met a new puppy who matched his enthusiasm, the two took off, racing in happy circles through the snow. Wanting to soak in every moment of fun, we gave him an extra ten minutes to run his heart out.
Then, in an instant, everything changed. At full speed, Floyd lost his footing and collided with a solid wooden fence post, the impact immediately fracturing his femur in two.
It was a heartbreaking moment for us, especially for our boy Floyd.

VET VISIT - cost est. $1350.00
It’s now about noon on Friday, heading into a long weekend, when we found ourselves at Floyd’s vet. After examination and x-rays, we learned that Floyd had a broken femur, something that confirmed our denial. The news hit hard—he would need surgery, and without insurance, the cost was a daunting $15k. Our vet recommended a nearby Veterinary Emergency Hospital downtown. Without missing a beat, we rushed Floyd there, hopeful that a surgeon would be available to repair his injury immediately.

ER STAY - cost est. $4300.00
It’s around 4-5 PM on Friday and we say our temporary goodbyes to Floyd as he begins his 6-day stay at the ER while he waits for his Tuesday evaluation. We have a conversation with the doctor, who reassures us that Floyd will be heavily sedated to keep him comfortable during this waiting period. Every day, we receive updates from the rotating doctors and we also call in multiple times to check on him. In an effort to keep him calm, we’ve decided not to visit, so he can rest without added stress.

6 DAY WAIT - priceless
Friday: GoFundMe is created with a goal of $20,000.00, to help with whatever can help alleviate the added cost of the medical vet bill.

Saturday: Diana called and emailed every vet clinic and hospital within a 3-hour radius of Downtown Toronto, hoping to find a surgeon who could offer Floyd a more affordable surgery option. In less than 24 hours, the outpouring of love and support was nothing short of incredible. Friends, family and even strangers rallied together and generously contributed to our GoFundMe campaign, helping us raise over $2,000. We were truly amazed at how many people stepped forward to help.

Despite his discomfort and confusion, Floyd kept calm and patient through it all. He had a late meal at night and managed to take a short walk with support. While he was heavily sedated for pain management, his quiet strength shone through every step of the way. Our wonderful rescue, Don’t Furry, Be Happy stepped up to help secure a surgeon.

Sunday:
Another 25 cm of snow had fallen and as much as we wished we could have visited Floyd, we were stuck at home. The doctors adjusted his medication to keep him comfortable and he was eating every 6 hours, staying hydrated through IV and had a catheter while he was sedated. Not surprising that Floyd won over the staff with his sweet kisses of thanks and his dopey charming looks. In just 48 hours, we raised 40% of our GoFundMe goal—WOW! Our amazing rescue reached out to help and worked hard to secure the best surgeon for Floyd as soon as possible.

Monday:
Floyd is still at the ER, he continued to remain positive and was scheduled to see a surgeon for evaluation and quote.

Tuesday:
After hearing back from several vet clinics and hospitals with no immediate openings, we faced the reality of a significant surgery cost. Even though we had raised 40% on GoFundMe, we were still unsure how we’d make it happen. But by 1pm, everything changed! The rescue team worked tirelessly and secured Floyd an appointment with a specialized surgeon in Caledon. His surgery was now scheduled bright and early Wednesday morning at 9am. Making Floyd stay one more night at the ER for extra care.

Wednesday:
At 5 a.m., we picked up Floyd from the ER. He had lost around 10 lbs and his ribs were visible—a sight that takes us back to when we first adopted him. His are around his eyes have greyed a bit, but there was joy and confusion as he saw us, still a groggy from the medication. After a drive up to Caledon for his 7:30 a.m. assessment and surgery, Floyd underwent a successful two-hour long surgery, followed by a few hours of recovery. By 2 p.m., we were so grateful to bring him home.

SURGERY - cost est. $4200.00
With the help of Don’t Furry, Be Happy Rescue, they successfully arranged for Floyd's surgery with their trusted veterinary clinic! They worked tirelessly to secure a more affordable quote for the procedure. Floyd's surgery was scheduled for 9 AM, the 2-hour surgery went smoothly, with the skilled surgeon carefully securing two metal plates to repair Floyd’s femur. When it was time to pick him up, Floyd was finally heading home!

1 WEEK POST SURGERY
With a paper bag full of pain and infection prevention meds, Floyd is making steady progress and slowly returning to his vibrant self. His right hind leg, shaved and marked by a long scar secured with stitches and 24 staples, is healing—though it looks a bit intimidating. He’s not yet putting weight on it and limps as he walks, spending most of his days resting comfortably in our living room. Floyd still has plenty of puppy energy and eagerly heads to the door at any sign of a walk, though he’s currently on doctor’s orders for short, careful strolls. His appetite is picking up, and he’s drinking well. Floyd’s biggest joy comes when the kids arrive home, showering him with love and attention. The journey ahead may be long, but we’re filled with hope, knowing it will eventually lead to many wonderful adventures together.
