Zyer's Recovery from a Life-Changing Head Injury
Donation protected
On Tuesday, January 17, 2023, my 17-year-old daughter, Zyer Smith, a senior, honor student at Jefferson County High School, sustained a life-changing head injury doing what she loves: playing basketball. The injury occurred with less than two minutes left in the basketball game against Franklin County. It appears that she was pushed to the ground by a player from the opposing team. As a result, she hit the back of her head on the gym floor. I rushed onto the court because I knew my baby was hurt. In visible pain, the trainer treated her before she was transported to the local hospital.
Due to the extent of her injury, she was transported to the Batson Children's Hospital in Jackson, Mississippi. For two days, Zyer was unable to talk. After numerous tests and evaluations, it was determined that she suffered a severe concussion. Throughout the entire ordeal, so many people expressed their concerns and love for my daughter. I received numerous calls and texts. More importantly, my family received countless prayers and well wishes. Because of those prayers, Zyer spoke her first words on Thursday, January 19, 2023. She said, “Where is my coach? I want to play basketball.” After speaking those powerful words, she immediately started crying.
Zyer will need further treatment and therapy over the next couple of months. The doctors also informed us that it is a possibility that she may never be able to play basketball again. It is almost certain that she will not be able to finish this season, ending her high school career. As we try to process everything, we know this new reality will have an enormous impact on my baby. Basketball is her life, and she recently received her first offer.
Despite the challenges, we are so grateful for the outpouring of love and support. So many people reached out, wanting to help Zyer as she embarks on this long road to recovery.
We anticipate thousands of dollars in medical expenses due to her head injury. Therefore, any contribution is greatly appreciated. Zyer is a fighter, and together we are going to win this battle. Please keep us in your prayers.
