People’s Participation in Education (WATU) is a small NGO, registered in Tanzania and working in the Kilimanjaro Region, whose mission is to offer able young people from financially disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to realize their academic potential.
We first learned about WATU when Kris visited on a school trip in 2008, his English teacher being one of the founders.
Kris’ grandfather Kiarti, Linda’s father, always said “when you’ve been successful enough, please give back to the community that helped you make that success”. An education is one of the most powerful ways to equip a young person. Inspired by Kris’ teacher, Henrik and the Svennas family have been supporting WATU ever since that first visit.
Since 2006, they have supported 200 students each year, in local secondary schools and provided educational materials and in-service training to teachers in the Kilimanjaro region.
