ESA Earthwatch Trip to Costa Rica
Donation protected
Hello! We are Daniel, Cristie, and Rosa, math and science teachers at Essex Street Academy , a NYC public school in the Lower East Side. We are working with an organization called the Earthwatch Institute to take a group of 14 students to conduct research in Costa Rica this April and are raising money to reduce the cost of the trip for students’ families.
The Earthwatch Institute works to engage people in environmental field research across the world. On this trip, students will be studying pollinators, like bees and hummingbirds, that are crucial to Costa Rica's ecological health. This trip will provide a truly unique opportunity for our students, allowing them to work in the field with world class scientists in the tropical forests of Costa Rica. This has the potential to inspire students to pursue careers in STEM fields, as well as foster a passion for environmental conservation and an appreciation for nature that they can take back to NYC. Additionally, just traveling to a new place- meeting different people, stepping out of one's comfort zone, and being exposed to a different way of being- can be a life changing experience.
We are working to raise money for student scholarships because we believe that this opportunity should be available to students regardless of their family's ability to pay for the trip. With the program fee, flights, meals, and other transportation, this trip will cost about $2,800 per student. Families are contributing what they can and we are confident that we will be able to raise money to cover scholarships for students who need them. We have been awarded a grant from the Earthwatch Institute and the students are hard at work fundraising! With your help, it is our goal that all students accepted to the program will be able to attend!
Please consider donating to support our trip. Thank you so much for your support!
