My sister Olivia (Liv) seemed like the typical 20 something woman. She had a rewarding career as a teacher, recently married, homeowner, a dog, baby on the way, the whole nine yards. But she was far from typical, she was extraordinary. Everyone she met was drawn to her. She had this magnetism that couldn’t be escaped. Liv was always the nicest, most fun, wittiest, prettiest, and most of the time the tallest person in the room. Even when she found out she had breast cancer she remained true to herself.
Olivia was pregnant with her first daughter and could not be more excited. Her and her husband Steve had their whole lives ahead of them and starting their family was what they looked forward to most. While Olivia was pregnant she found a lump on her breast. She had it biopsied, and was told that it was a non-aggressive form of cancer called DCIS that had not spread. She opted to have a double mastectomy after the birth of Ava in 2012 to greatly reduce her risk of breast cancer. After surrounding nodes were checked she was given the all clear…cancer free!
When she got pregnant with her second daughter Mea in 2013 she was surprised and scared to find another lump located in her armpit. It was biopsied and came back malignant; her worst fear was happening again, she had breast cancer. It was recommended to immediately start chemotherapy because being pregnant, they didn’t want to scan her, so she did. Three days after Mea was born in May 2014 she was told that she had metastatic breast cancer that had spread to her bones and brain and that she would never be cured.
Olivia continued on with treatment, hormone blocking medications, radiation, gamma knife procedures, more chemotherapy, and she fought…HARD. She responded well to all of the treatment.
She contracted pneumonia this past summer and it beat her up. She was going through chemo at the time which had to stop. She was so bummed out that she couldn’t spend the summer with her girls like she had planned. They were her life and she could no longer hold them, play with them, carry them to bed, or be the amazing mother that she always had been.
She got through the pneumonia and a few weeks later went back to the hospital with some swelling in her face. She was in septic shock. The doctors at University of Pennsylvania did everything they could and we are all so grateful for all that they did. Her body just wasn’t capable and she lost her hard fought battle on Thursday, August 27, 2015.
Olivia left the love of her life, her husband Steve, two beautiful daughters Ava who will be 3 in October, and Mea who just turned 1 this past May.
Being a teacher, Olivia was a huge proponent of education and fully expected her girls to go all the way! Olivia had both Bachelor’s and Masters degrees and planned on getting her PhD. Help us raise educational funds to give the girls some of what their mother would have wanted.
Steve deserves to spend this time with his family to mourn the loss of his beloved. Help us to lessen his burden with medical expenses from treatments, medications, doctors, hospitals, and numerous other bills.
If you would like to send donations directly to Steve please contact me Valerie, Olivia's sister and I can provide you with that information.
