Joe Olvera was born on July 21, 1944 and raised in El Paso, Texas - just a stone's throw from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.  Joe was a writer most of his life.  He started out as the sports editor for his high school newspaper at Jefferson High School.  Joe joined the U.S. Air Force so he could attend college on the G.I. Bill.  He was a student at the University of Texas at El Paso and at Columbia University in New York City.  His first published book was "Voces de la Gente"(1972), and his latest book was "Chicano - Sin Fin! Memoirs of a Chicano Journalist" (ISBN 0-9777992-9-9; 2008 by Zapata 1910 Press).  Before retiring, Joe worked at USA Today as one of the editors on the Across the USA Page, and as a reporter for the El Paso Times, El Paso Herald-Post, and KDBC-TV.  Joe is listed in Who's Who in America, Who's Who Among Hispanic Americans, and many other such lists.  He did freelance editing, writing and consulting.  Joe Olvera ended his writings with “Sin Fin” on Friday, March 4, 2016!

Joe served honorably in the U.S. Air Force, and continued his service to our community throughout his life.

Joe, we thank you for your service! Rest in Peace!
