Let's Roll
by nephew Nathaniel (Age 10):
I have a quadriplegic Uncle by the name of Michael Boyd. His accident happened 21 years ago when he was standing on a scaffold as a building contractor. The scaffolding was on dry soft back fill soil when suddenly it shifted causing Uncle Mike to fall head first, 18 feet, to the ground. The fall resulted in a broken neck and a damaged spinal cord. Fortunately Uncle Mike could still use his arms and shoulders. Today Uncle Mike can use a manual wheel chair, a hand cycle, a kayak, adaptable snow skis, and a handicap accessible vehicle. Uncle Mike can also give warm hugs to anyone who means something to him.
I enjoy being around Uncle Mike. He is always telling us about interesting things. Every summer we go kayaking together. He doesn't just let us, the cousins, go kayaking with him, but he invites many other people too. Uncle Mike inspires everybody with his humor, love, kindness, courage, discipline and Godliness.
Continued by nephew Jacob (age 11):
My Uncle has a handicap accessible van that is 15 years old, with over 183,000 miles on it. He calls it "Chatter" because she makes more and more noise in her old age. This van was bought by friends and family who wanted Uncle Mike to experience more independence. At that point, Uncle Mike had been in a wheel chair for 6 years. This van made it much easier for him to go to places where he could work out, be more involved in the community with volunteering and church activities. Now that it is 15 years old, the van has to go into the shop every 3-4 months for expensive repairs. Also the kneeling ramp no longer works, making my Uncle have a quick descent and sometimes crashing into a wall.
We, my younger brother and I, want to raise enough money for my Uncle to get a Toyota Sieana. This van will allow him to use his light weight wheel chair and transfer into a real car seat, which will make it more comfortable and safer. The floor will have a rubber coating so that he will be able to clean the floor easier than the current carpet in is old van. The newer van, has in-dash equipment making navigating and taking calls much safer. Also, both side doors are automatic and the lift gate will be at the back of the van. Allowing easier access. Also the low mileage will keep my Uncle out of the mechanic shop.
Please help my Uncle Mike. He really needs a new van. It will help him keep active both, physically and in the community. It will also help my 78 year old Grandma (who cares for him) to not have to run around so much. Thanks.
Disclosure: the first three thousand dollars raised will go toward the legal fees to set up a trust fund so that Michael Boyd will not get penalized for saving money. All the rest of the money raised will go towards the purchase of a lightly used handicap accessible van.
