My name is Ana I am here wanting to reach out today because two months ago I got the 2nd worst phone call in my life. Few of you might know what we have been going through but to a certain point. Not to the whole extension of our emergency. I have been very quiet about it. And if you know anything about me, I keep personal things to myself.

Our Mom, who lives in Ecuador, was found in the house on the floor and was rushed to the hospital. I live near Chicago and flew out to Ecuador within a few hours of that horrific phone call. When I arrived, the doctors told us she suffered a brain aneurysm, and of all the levels there are, it was the worst of the worst. Actually the Drs. before surgery basically told my family. “If you believe in God... Pray and get ready”. (to let her go).

One thing of all the great qualities the lady in the picture has is that she a fighter. The surgery was a success, but the fight was not over. For the next two agonizing months after surgery she stayed in the ICU in a coma. She is just now starting to wake up from the coma which has made us extremely happy and grateful, but she is not fully awake. The doctors say her brain still needs time to connect and apparently it is a very slow process. Her brain basically has been re-set and will need to learn everything all over again, and parts of her body may be paralyzed. We won’t know the full extent of the damage the aneurysm has done until she is fully awake.

Ecuador health insurance and health care is different than other developed countries. Here, they can at any given moment say we are no longer going to assist you in your medical payments and require any further treatment be paid by the individual. This is exactly what my mother’s insurance has done. We have not been able to move my mom fully out of the ICU because she currently has an infection. Once they are able to treat the infection and move her out of the ICU, we will still need to stay in the hospital and have her monitored for another two months or more. Once she leaves the hospital, we will need nurses, therapists and equipment to help me take care of my mother.

My father, my mom’s husband lost his life a few years ago. My mom only has us, her children to help her. I quit my job in Chicago, and left my husband and two small children to come be by my mother’s side and help her. I have spent the last two months by my mom’s side, and my plan is to spend more months here. We need help. All the medical bills, therapists, nurses, continued ICU treatment moving forward from today are now on our shoulders to pay. We are asking for any donation you might be able to provide to help us and my mom.

Mi nombre es Ana, estoy aquí queriendo comunicarme hoy porque hace dos meses recibí la 2da peor llamada telefónica de mi vida. Pocos de ustedes puede que sepan lo que hemos estado pasando, pero hasta cierto punto. No a toda la extensión de nuestra emergencia. He estado muy callada al respecto. Y si sabes algo sobre mí, me guardo cosas personales.

Nuestra madre, que vive en Ecuador, fue encontrada en la casa en el piso y fue llevada de urgencia al hospital. Vivo cerca de Chicago y volé a Ecuador a las pocas horas de esa horrible llamada telefónica. Cuando llegué, los médicos nos dijeron que sufrío un aneurisma cerebral, y de todos los niveles que hay, fue el peor de los peores. En realidad, los doctores antes de la cirugía básicamente le dijeron a mi familia. "Si crees en Dios... Reza y prepárate". (para dejarla ir).

Una cosa de todas las grandes cualidades que tiene la dama de la foto es que es una luchona. La cirugía fue un éxito, pero la lucha no había terminado. Durante los siguientes dos meses agonizantes después de la cirugía permaneció en la UCI en coma. Ahora está empezando a despertar del coma que nos ha hecho extremadamente felices y agradecidos, pero no está completamente despierta. Los médicos dicen que su cerebro todavía necesita tiempo para conectarse y aparentemente es un proceso muy lento. Su cerebro básicamente se ha reiniciado y tendrá que aprender todo de nuevo, y partes de su cuerpo pueden estar paralizadas. No sabremos el alcance total del daño que el aneurisma ha hecho hasta que esté completamente despierta.

El seguro de salud y la atención médica de Ecuador son diferentes a los de otros países desarrollados. Aquí, en cualquier momento pueden decir que ya no vamos a ayudarlo en sus pagos médicos y requerir que el individuo pague cualquier tratamiento adicional. Esto es exactamente lo que ha hecho el seguro de mi madre. No hemos podido sacar a mi madre completamente de la UCI porque actualmente tiene una infección. Una vez que puedan tratar la infección y sacarla de la UCI, aún tendremos que permanecer en el hospital y monitorearla durante otros dos meses o mas. Una vez que salga del hospital, necesitaremos enfermeras, terapeutas y equipos para ayudarnos a cuidar a mi madre.

Mi padre, el esposo de mi madre, perdió la vida hace unos años. Mi mamá solo nos tiene a nosotros, sus hijos, para ayudarla. Dejé mi trabajo en Chicago y dejé a mi esposo y a mis dos hijos pequeños para venir al lado de mi madre y ayudarla. He pasado los últimos dos meses al lado de mi madre, y mi plan es pasar otros meses aquí. Necesitamos ayuda. Todas las facturas médicas, terapeutas, enfermeras, tratamiento continuo en la UCI que avanza a partir de hoy están ahora sobre nuestros hombros para pagar. Estamos pidiendo cualquier donación que pueda proporcionar para ayudarnos a nosotros y a mi madre
