HELP Us Rebuild The Learning Tree School!

For over 45 years, The Learning Tree Cultural Preparatory School has served the Bronx and surrounding neighborhoods with love, pride, and powerful outcomes. But in June 2022, we were forced to leave the building we had called home for 21 years. It was a 30,000 square foot space that allowed us to serve over 300 students.
The building was taken over by a charter school with more financial backing, and we were given almost no notice. In a city like New York, where affordable space is nearly impossible to find, this was devastating.
We’ve been doing everything we can to stay afloat, but now we truly need help to keep going.

A Message from Our Founder, Lois Gregory

“As one of many children growing up in a segregated town, we were told that we were inferior. We were told that slavery saved us and that we would never go to college and I believed it.
How lucky I was to get to New York and finally learned the truth about my culture, it changed everything. I dreamed of building a school where every child would be uplifted, celebrated, and taught to see their own brilliance. That dream became The Learning Tree.”

What Makes The Learning Tree Special

We are an independent, culturally rooted school serving children from Nursery through 8th Grade. We focus on educating the whole child academically, artistically, emotionally, and socially.

Here is what our students experience:

• Early reading success. Many students are reading by kindergarten.
• A full arts program that includes dance, drumming, drama, sewing, and entrepreneurship.
• Financial literacy and leadership skills taught at a young age.
• Meaningful field trips each year. Third graders visit Pennsylvania Dutch Country, fourth graders visit historic Pennsylvania, fifth graders travel to Washington D.C., sixth graders visit the Gullah Islands, seventh graders go camping upstate, and eighth graders take international trips.
• Eighth graders have first-hand experience in community service and global citizenship. Our students have traveled to countries like Ghana, Brazil, Egypt, Kenya, China, and South Africa. They have raised funds and provided direct aid like building a water well in a Ghanaian village, etc.

Our students consistently give back to charity, including raising over $5,000 annually for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital through our Trike-a-Thon.

Our graduates thrive:
• More than 95 percent of alumni graduate high school.
• More than 85 percent go on to graduate college.
• Our former students become teachers, doctors, lawyers, engineers, artists, and more. One of our recent graduates was accepted into a dual PhD program at Yale University.
