I am a rising senior at North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee, Georgia and I have recently been accepted by Brown University to attend a summer program for outstanding high school students. I have maintained a grade point average of 3.93 and have been highly involved in the Hispanic Organization Promoting Education (HoPe). I am enrolling in an engineering course because I am passionate about Medical Sciences along with Engineering. I would like to go to college and major in Biomedical Engineering.

Seeing my grandmother be affected by Alzheimer’s and observing her progression through each stage has made me realize all the research that is still needed in preventing and detecting this debilitating disease. I’m interested in researching what happens to the brain as Alzheimer’s develops, how it can be detected at an earlier stage, and what can be done to prevent or stop the deterioration of the brain. I would also like to possibly invent a medical device that can be customized for each patient based on their individual needs. This device will stop or slow down the deterioration of the brain once the disease has been detected. It will allow them to continue to perform simple everyday tasks that otherwise would not have been possible and therefore provide a better quality of life. My goal is that my contributions to the Alzheimer’s community make a difference and help save lives.

I am hoping that this course will help me explore this academic interest and help me prepare for college. Students from all over the world attend these programs. I know that I would gain a great deal from both my studies and interactions with my peers. I am so eager to participate in this life changing experience. How many weeks I can attend will be determined by how much money I raise. I am reaching out to you to ask for help. I need to raise any additional funds by July 5, 2019.
