Dear, dear friends:
My name is Sandy. I am a recently widowed, 78 year old woman learning to live my life without my husband while continuing to do what I love most: stage directing, conducting acting workshops and mentoring young actors as they gain a love of theatre and confidence in themselves.
Now I find that I am no longer able to do any of those things because of a medical problem that has limited my ability to breathe correctly, to eat, and most importantly to be understood when I speak. I have a torus deformity of my palate which has grown during the years and is now resting on the back of my tongue preventing my being able to bite or chew food. Also, my teeth have been pushed forward and have loosened and I am now gluing loose ones in one at a time. The bone needs to be removed, along with all of my teeth, replaced by full dentures, with a possible breaking of my jaw and re-alignment. It is terrifying to think about but in order for me to be able to lead any type of normal life, I have no choice but to take a deep breath, put one foot in front of the other and get it done.
As difficult as it may be for me to ask, I need help. My only income is my monthly Social Security check which covers my rent and expenses. I have Medicare but unfortunately Medicare does not cover dental. There is an oral surgeon in my town that is willing to do the removal of the torus, and I have been accepted as a patient at the dental school in Portland to have the extractions and dentures, but nevertheless it is still going to be way more expensive than I can afford out of pocket. Because of this I am becoming depressed and isolated which scares me almost as much as the dental work I need. I fought asking for help for a long time until a group of loving, caring, women came in and said "enough is enough, ask for the damn money!" and so I am.
I thank you in advance if you find that you can help me continue to do the work I love and to travel down that beautiful road that leads ahead.
