Abused Gypsy Horse Recovery Fund

Donation protected
Most folks gasp in awe of a magnificent Gypsy horse floats across the pasture with mane, tail and feathers streaming behind; proud, majestic, mystical.

Yesterday, we gasped for a different reason. When photos of starving, neglected, abused Gypsy Horses crossed our feeds yesterday, the shock was palpable. We looked at the photos, disbelieving that someone could do that to any animal, let alone one which was not theirs. The horror continued to unfold as it was discovered that at least 3 mares, one stallion, and a foal were in this deplorable condition - and those are just the ones we know of.

The Gypsy community sprang into action, and within a matter of hours, several of the horses were removed from the lease situation by their legal owners. They are now at Tufts Equine Medical facility in Massachusetts, facing a very long, delicate recovery process. Other horses, including the 5 month old foal, have not been released yet. And word is that there are other horses are in the same condition - the astounding Friesian and Andalusian horse breeds are among those who have not yet been released.

This fund is specifically created for the medical costs which will be incurred to bring these horses back to health if possible. The recovery process is long, delicate, dangerous, and time consumptive - refeeding syndrome and reconditioning horses in this shape takes a huge amount of oversight by experienced medical professionals. June and Taylor are completely aware of,  and have approved of, this fundraising effort.

John Donne said it perfectly: "No man is an island." By helping these owners now, you make a statement that you are here, and that these horses matter to you - yesterday, today, and always.

By donating today, we remind each other that together, we can do something about anything at all. We are angry, we are sad, and we want to help. Donating is one way to help.

All funds will be given to the legal owners of the horses, and, should there be any left over, the money will be used to find and retain legal counsel to get the rest of the horses off the property and into medical care...we can't leave them behind.

Please give what you can - a little, or a lot - as all of it makes a huge difference. It's not simply money you're giving; you're making a loud statement to the horses themselves that they are still adored, still loved, still cared for...and that we as a community will not allow this abuse and neglect go unaddressed, to slip silently into the past.

And once you've donated, go kiss a horse, and tell them "no more, ever."
