In December 2021 after feeling unwell for a few weeks, our dad, Alan (Big Al) was quickly referred
by his GP to Stepping Hill and finally to Wythenshawe Hospital with a growth on his vocal chord. After his biopsy, shortly before Christmas, we received the devastating news that he had been diagnosed with a stage 4 cancer of the larynx.
At the end of January he underwent a total laryngectomy, which includes detaching the eating & breathing function, enabling him to breathe through a new opening in his neck, a stoma.
For now we are communicating with him via lip reading but we are confident with speech therapy
we will be able to hear his voice again. We are currently awaiting a start date for a six
week radiotherapy course which he will have to undertake Monday to Friday at The
Christie.
During these few months, my family have come to understand the importance of a
Macmillan nurse. We have been cared for by 3 of them, one for each hospital consultant, who become our main supporter for all things cancer.
When we saw the Snowdon at Night challenge for
Macmillan we knew that this was something we had to do.
Undertaking this challenge for this amazing charity is me, Laura, Tasha & David and Mum. With of course the support of our cheer team (looking after the little ones) Dad & Stephen.
At midnight on 26th June we will set off on our walk to the summit of Snowdon and I can't wait to update you on our training and pictures
of the magical moment we arrive at the top.
Now to the important bit…. YOU our friends, family and any others you wish to share with could make a donation to this very important cause. Every “penny” will be greatly appreciated by us all and will make such a difference to another family finding themselves in a situation similar to ours.
We thank you in advance of your donation or your share of our great fundraising effort!!
