Help Xi to wake up from coma

Donation protected
Update Nov 2023: After being in a coma following her accident in France, Xi was successfully moved back home to China in the end of August. Thanks to your donations she could be treated there in ICU and due to the intensive treatments, she improved significantly and could be moved to the normal hospital ward in October. Unfortunately, the brain damage remains extensive and she still has a long road for recovery with daily physiotherapy, language exercises and swallowing exercises etc... The cost in the normal ward reduced to approximately 250 Eur / day, but the two month in the ICU consumed all the funds we raised so far and the family has not yet received any compensation for the car accident or disability payment from the insurance. Please help Xi continue the treatments!

A more detailed story, hospital bills, and photos can be found in the updates, and the beginning of the story is below.

Dear all,
I am Uli Dusek, associate professor at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, and I am hoping to raise funds for my PhD student Xi Sun.

During her holidays in France, Xi was in a serious car accident and was flown to the Hospital Nord in Marseilles for treatment and surgery on a fractured pelvis. After several days in the hospital, while awaiting surgery, a previously undiagnosed internal injury caused a serious infection. Several surgeries were needed to deal with the infection and complications after the second surgery led to cardiac arrest. The lack of oxygen resulted in brain damage and Xi has not woken up since. The doctors in France say her chance of waking up is small and they do not see many further treatment options.

This is devastating news for her family, but also for her friends and colleagues both in China and the Netherlands. Her brother Nan came to Marseilles as soon as he could get a flight and a visum and has not left her side since then. Xi's family and the insurance company have succeeded in arranging a transport by air ambulance to China, where she can be treated in the West China Hospital near her family. The doctors there still want to try further treatments in the hope Xi will wake up, because she is still young.

Unfortunately, her student insurance will only cover two weeks of treatment in China and having lived abroad for the past year, Xi has no insurance in China. The first estimate is that hospital costs will be around 500 Euros / day (depending on the exact treatment plan) and she will need to stay in the hospital for a long time. Even if she can be released, a nurse will be needed at home. Her parents will need to commute to the hospital and miss work to spend time with her. All these costs will be too much for the family to bear.

Prior to her accident Xi was a very promising student. Despite being quiet and rather shy, she moved to the other end of the word to pursue her dream to become an outstanding scientist. Now this dream and all other dreams and goals of a 26 year old girl seem so far away.

With your donation, you can help Xi get treatment that could give a chance to live and be reunited with her family. All donations will be directly transferred to Xi's Dutch bank account, which her family can access. The cost estimates will be updated once Xi is in China and they are known exactly.
