Midwifery School

Hi! My name is Carolina Webb. Im currently enrolled in the National Midwifery Institute where my goal is to complete a 3 year intensive program of Midwifery in order to be eligible to take the NARM (North American Registry of Midwives) Exam and ultimately become a Certified Professional Midwife in California.
This goal/dream/passion of mine is incredibly important to me. In America, our statistics surrounding positive outcomes for mothers and babies with Obstetric (OBGYN) care are steadily decreasing. With some of the lowest numbers of all developed countries worldwide. When we compare these numbers to either our own Midwifery statistics or to those of other countries where midwifery care is still the primary type of care to expectant families, we can very quickly conclude that, put simply, we need more midwives.
This is no easy journey, however. As a young mother to a beautifully wild 3 year old girl, a student, a working individual, etc. The ability to afford school fees, attend births with no pay as student, maintain side jobs with an "on call" schedule (having to drop whatever is going on, whether it be a day job or getting called into a birth at 3am,) and take care of my personal matters including feeding my three year old and myself... I find that without help, it seems impossible. I have had to "freeze" my school program due to the inability to make payments twice and am currently frozen. I have lost jobs due to having to leave suddenly when a mother goes into labor or calling out because ive been at a birth all night. Currently, I nanny or house clean when i can, and i take Doula clients - but by law i cannot charge a family for Doula services if i am attending their birth as a student midwife, so it gets a little tricky. In order to move forward through my school program - I will need to focus 100% on attending births as student midwife.
For those who are not familiar with what a midwife is - A midwife serves as Primary care provider to birthing mothers. We offer all prenatal, postnatal, and labor and delivery care. We screen mothers to assure eligibility and safety for out of hospital births. (which is between 92-96% of all pregnancies.) We provide labs, testing, and all prenatal screening. We attend the birth and delivery, and are trained and certified in Neonatal Resuscitation (a certification i currently hold) as well as 6 weeks of post natal care.
Midwives also provide well women visits, fertility support, pap smears and STI screening, etc.
California Licensed Midwives are licensed by the Medical Board of California - the same agency that licenses Physicians.
Midwifery school really is all encompassing and takes everything you've got. I am committed, and then some - to becoming a midwife. Im just in a position of really needing support and assistance. So, im asking for help. If I can receive help financially and pay for my education, by the grace of God and the kindness of those who are able, I would be incredibly and forever grateful.
Anything helps! Truly.
My school fee is 18,500 in total.
I have 5,000 paid off from that, however -
Books + Equipment is estimated by the institute to cost between 4-6 thousand. I try to buy second hand books when i can, but its not always an option.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this information and if you are able and willing to donate to my education - my appreciation is insurmountable.
With achieving this goal, i will be able to support families through their pregnancy and birth, provide compassionate healthcare to women and newborns, and independently support my daughter and myself. What a dream!
